If Microsoft stock makes up too much of your investable wealth, diversify by first measuring your total exposure, then choosing a broader mix of investments that fits your time horizon and risk tolerance. You do not necessarily have to sell all your shares at once: you can sell part of the position, direct new contributions elsewhere, or use a combination. Before selling, review potential taxes and transaction costs.

Why a large Microsoft position can add risk

A portfolio concentrated in one company is exposed to risks tied to that company, not just to the broader market. The SEC warns that inadequate diversification increases portfolio risk exposure. Diversification means spreading money among different investments to reduce risk; it does not prevent losses or guarantee that another investment will perform better.

Owning several funds does not automatically solve the problem. Funds can hold many of the same large companies, and a sector-focused fund may leave you concentrated in a narrow part of the market. The SEC advises investors to look beyond fund labels and check underlying holdings. See the SEC’s Asset Allocation and Diversification guidance.

1. Measure your total exposure before choosing trades

Start by estimating Microsoft’s share of your investable assets. Include shares held directly and any indirect exposure through mutual funds, ETFs, or other investments. Also consider whether your job, bonus, or other compensation depends on Microsoft, or whether you hold additional individual-company stock. Those exposures can make your financial situation more dependent on one company than a brokerage account balance suggests.

Check the largest holdings and sector exposure of each fund you own rather than relying only on its name. There is no universal percentage at which a Microsoft position becomes “too concentrated”; the appropriate level depends on your circumstances and risk tolerance.

2. Decide what a diversified portfolio should look like for you

Set your broad allocation before deciding how many Microsoft shares to sell. The right mix depends in part on your time horizon and willingness and ability to accept risk. Diversification can mean holding a wider range of companies and sectors within stocks, and it may also include other asset categories such as bonds or cash, depending on your plan.

A broad mutual fund or ETF can make it easier to own many investments, but a fund is not necessarily broad just because it holds multiple securities. Review its underlying holdings and sector exposure for overlap with your other investments and your direct Microsoft shares.

3. Choose how to reduce the concentration

The SEC describes three general rebalancing methods: sell from an overweight holding and buy underweight assets, use new money to buy underweight assets, or direct ongoing contributions toward underweight categories. These approaches can be combined.

Approach How it works Trade-off to consider
Sell some Microsoft shares Reduce the position and use the proceeds to buy assets that bring your portfolio closer to your chosen allocation. A sale may have tax consequences and transaction costs. The amount and timing of a sale depend on your plan and tax facts.
Invest new money elsewhere Use available cash or new contributions to buy underrepresented assets rather than adding to Microsoft. This can reduce concentration over time without selling the full position immediately, but it may not change exposure quickly enough for every investor.
Redirect ongoing contributions Change where regular investment contributions go so they favor underweight categories. The effect depends on how much you contribute and how large the existing Microsoft position is.
Combine selling and contributions Sell a portion and also direct future money toward underweight investments. Consider both the pace of change and the costs or tax consequences of the sale.

Before choosing among these routes, compare how much each would actually reduce company and sector concentration, how quickly it would change your exposure, and whether the resulting stock, bond, and cash mix matches your goals. Avoid assuming a complex strategy is a simple substitute for diversification; borrowing, derivatives, or other arrangements can add risks and require specialized advice.

4. Check taxes and costs before selling

Selling appreciated shares can have tax consequences, but the result depends on your own facts and applicable tax rules. Before placing a trade, review the shares’ tax lots, purchase dates, cost basis, account type, and any transaction charges. The SEC recommends considering fees and tax consequences when rebalancing. Its Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing outlines rebalancing approaches and these considerations.

Because tax treatment depends on your situation, consult a qualified tax professional before selling if you are unsure how a transaction would be treated. A financial planner can also help assess whether a proposed allocation fits your goals; neither a general rule nor a fund label can determine the right choice for you.

Could donating appreciated Microsoft shares make sense?

If you already intend to make a charitable gift, donating appreciated publicly traded shares may be an option to discuss with the charity and a tax professional. IRS Publication 526 (2025) describes qualified appreciated stock and limits that depend on the property and the circumstances. Donation rules do not mean every gift avoids capital-gains tax or produces a deduction equal to the shares’ market value. Review the applicable rules in IRS Publication 526 and get advice specific to your situation.
