To reduce concentration risk without giving up renewable-energy stocks, treat them as one sector within your full portfolio. Review your mix of stocks, bonds and cash; check how much of your stock exposure depends on clean energy; then rebalance toward an allocation suited to your goals, time horizon and tolerance for loss. There is no universal renewable-energy percentage that fits every investor.
1. Start with your complete portfolio
List investments across all accounts, including retirement accounts. Look through mutual funds and ETFs as well as individual stocks: a fund may own renewable-energy companies even if its name or broad-market label does not make that exposure obvious. The aim is to understand what you own in total, not just the stocks in one brokerage account.
Then assess the portfolio’s mix of asset classes—such as stocks, bonds and cash—and its stock exposure across industries. The SEC’s asset-allocation and diversification guidance explains that the appropriate mix depends on personal factors, including time horizon and risk tolerance. It does not set a recommended allocation for renewable energy.
2. Decide how much sector concentration fits your plan
Separate your overall stock allocation from the portion invested in renewable energy. Consider whether the sector’s share of your total investments is consistent with your goals and how much loss you could tolerate. Do not set a target simply because clean-energy stocks have recently risen or fallen; recent performance alone does not determine a suitable allocation.

Diversification applies both between asset classes and within stocks, including across industries. Holding several renewable-energy companies may spread exposure among individual businesses, but it does not remove the portfolio’s dependence on one sector. The SEC’s diversification overview describes the purpose and limits of spreading investments.
3. Check what funds actually own
A mutual fund or ETF is not automatically diversified just because it holds many securities. A fund focused on clean energy can still concentrate its holdings in one industry. And owning several funds does not necessarily broaden exposure: their top holdings may overlap.

For each fund you own or are considering, compare these features:
- Industry and asset-class breadth: Does it span industries, or focus on clean energy? Does it hold stocks only, or include other asset classes?
- Top holdings and overlap: Compare the largest positions with your individual stocks and other funds. Multiple funds can own the same leading companies.
- Fees and other costs: Review the fund’s stated expenses and any costs involved in buying or selling it.
- Liquidity: Consider how readily you can trade the investment.
- Personal fit: Weigh the fund against your goal, time horizon and tolerance for loss.
The SEC’s overview of investment products identifies factors such as goals, risk and return, fees, diversification and liquidity for investors to consider. These general guidelines do not identify a best clean-energy fund or establish current fund fees.

4. Rebalance toward your intended mix
Rebalancing means bringing the portfolio back toward the allocation you chose for your plan. If renewable-energy holdings have grown to represent more than you intended, you can reduce that exposure or direct new money toward underweight categories. The appropriate approach depends on your circumstances; no single schedule is right for everyone.
Choose a method
- Calendar-based: Review the allocation periodically, such as on a schedule you select.
- Threshold-based: Review it when a category moves sufficiently far from its target.
- Contribution-based: Direct new contributions to underweight categories, which may help restore the mix without selling holdings.
The SEC discusses periodic and threshold-based reviews as possible approaches and notes that rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently. Its guidance does not prescribe a mandatory interval.

Check costs before selling
Before making a sale, consider transaction costs and potential tax consequences. In a taxable account, the effect of a sale can differ from its effect inside a tax-advantaged retirement account. If those consequences are unclear, consider getting advice from a qualified tax or financial professional. Buying other investments or directing contributions differently may also change the portfolio mix without selling.

Diversification can reduce the impact that a loss in one investment has on the overall portfolio, but it cannot guarantee a profit or prevent losses when markets broadly decline. A diversified portfolio can still fall in value. The SEC states this limitation in its investor guidance on diversification.

A useful decision sequence is therefore: inventory all holdings, set an overall asset mix that reflects your circumstances, assess industry concentration and fund overlap, and rebalance with attention to costs. Without your full holdings, account and tax context, time horizon and risk tolerance, no specific renewable-energy allocation can be responsibly prescribed.
