To protect a blind box figure, keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat, dust it gently, and store it in clean, suitable packaging or a stable container. A display case can reduce dust and handling, but it cannot make a hot or sunny location safe. Because blind box figures can use different plastics, paints, and finishes, follow the maker’s care instructions instead of assuming one cleaning method or storage condition works for all of them.
Choose a display spot away from light and heat
Place figures on a stable, level shelf away from direct sunlight, sunny windows, radiators, fireplaces, heaters, air-conditioning vents, and heat-emitting equipment. Both light and heat can damage plastics: light exposure is cumulative and may cause fading, yellowing, embrittlement, or other color changes, while higher temperatures can accelerate deterioration. The Canadian Conservation Institute’s plastics and rubber guidance and the Library of Congress guidance on limiting light damage explain these risks.
Strong visible light can cause damage over time, not only ultraviolet light. Keep display lighting low and cool; a case can still become warm if its lights generate heat. Do not assume that glass or acrylic blocks UV: check the specific product’s specifications if UV protection is important.
The Canadian Conservation Institute gives a maximum illumination of 150 lux and UV below 75 microwatts per lumen in its collections-care guidance for plastics and rubber. Those figures are not a tested universal target for home display or for every blind box figure, whose material may be unknown.

Choose between an open shelf and an enclosed case

Measure both the figure and the available shelf before choosing a case. A case is a dust barrier, not a substitute for a safe location; the conservation guidance on light and heat applies whether a figure is enclosed or not. Sideshow’s collectible-care tips also recommend a temperature-controlled environment and a sturdy, steady, level surface.
Store figures in packaging or containers that suit them
Use the original packaging when it is in good condition
The original box and inserts can help protect a figure during a move or temporary storage if they fit without forcing or pressing on it. Sideshow notes that original packaging is useful for storage or moving. However, an unopened box is not a guarantee of long-term preservation: heat and humidity can still create damaging conditions inside packaging.

Keep stored figures ventilated and inspect them
Good Smile Company advises keeping figures in a ventilated place, avoiding direct sunlight and strong fluorescent light, and periodically removing figures from packaging or containers. Its figure checklist, dated June 28, 2023, is maker guidance; follow the instructions for your own figure when available. Make inspection practical: choose storage that lets you check the figure periodically rather than treating sealed storage as automatically safer.
Choose additional containers carefully
The Library of Congress identifies polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyester plastics without added slip or coating agents as stable materials for collection storage, and advises against PVC and unknown plastics. This general collections guidance does not certify a particular container or mean a figure should touch the container directly. Check that the container fits without pressure and consider what materials contact the figure.

Avoid relying on attics, basements, or garages for long-term storage when conditions are difficult to control. The Library of Congress general preservation FAQ notes that these areas are often poor places for collections because of environmental fluctuations and water risks.
There is no single established ideal temperature or humidity for every blind box figure. The National Archives of Australia’s general object-preservation guidance suggests conditions near 20 °C and below 60% relative humidity for its object-care context; that is not a figure-specific tested target.

Remove dust gently and handle figures with care
Use a clean, soft detail brush or microfiber cloth, moving gently and supporting the figure where needed. Sideshow recommends these tools for dusting. Avoid aggressive brushing, which may stress delicate parts or finishes.
Do not assume alcohol, solvents, soaking, degreasers, sprays, or wet cleaning are safe for every figure. Plastics and surface finishes vary, and the available guidance does not validate a universal cleaning recipe for blind box figures. For stains or damp cleaning, consult the maker’s care instructions; for a valuable or fragile figure, ask a qualified conservator.

Make a simple care routine
- Before displaying: Check the maker’s care instructions and choose a steady, level location away from direct sun, strong light, and heat sources.
- When arranging a display: Decide whether dust protection from a case is worth the extra setup, measure the available space, and verify any product-specific UV claim. Keep case lighting low and cool.
- When storing: Use sound original packaging when it fits, or a suitable container made from a known stable material. Avoid locations with hard-to-control environmental or water risks.
- During care: Dust gently with a clean soft brush or microfiber cloth, and periodically inspect stored figures. Follow figure-specific instructions before attempting any stain removal or damp cleaning.
