To protect a large LEGO set, display it away from direct sunlight and heat, and consider an enclosed case to reduce dust settling on the build. Measure the completed model and the space where it will sit before buying a case; no case is guaranteed to stop all dust or prevent all fading.
Choose a safe location before choosing a case
Keep the build out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. LEGO advises storing bricks dry, away from heat and direct sunlight, and below 104°F (40°C); it warns that hotter storage may make bricks brittle or discolored over time. See LEGO’s storage guidance.
Sunlight can damage objects gradually. The Library of Congress explains that light damage is cumulative and may be irreversible, causing fading, yellowing, embrittlement, or color changes. This is general collection-care guidance, not a study of LEGO bricks, so it does not establish how quickly a particular set will fade. The Library notes that sunlight is intense and difficult to control. UV-filtering glazing can help when UV cannot be removed from a light source, but visible light can still cause damage; filtering UV is not a reason to place a set in direct sun. Use an enclosed case to reduce dust
Dust settles on open displays and can make a large, detailed build harder to clean. An enclosed display case can reduce dust settling on the model and make routine cleaning easier, but it should not be treated as fully dustproof. LEGO includes minifigure display cases among its storage options, and specialist retailer iDisplayit describes cases as helping prevent dust from settling.

When comparing cases, check the details that affect both fit and upkeep:
- Internal dimensions and clearance: Confirm usable length, width, and height, including room for protruding features.
- Access: Consider how the panels open or lift off when you need to clean or reposition the model.
- Support: Check that the base and the shelf or cabinet can support the build’s footprint and weight.
- Enclosure and care: Look at how completely the case closes and whether its material has particular scratch-care requirements.
- UV claims: If daylight is unavoidable, check the exact product specification. Do not assume every acrylic case filters UV.
iDisplayit says its premium-grade acrylic blocks 98% of UV rays. That is the retailer’s claim, not an independently verified figure for all acrylic or display cases. UV filtration also does not eliminate the risk from visible light.

Measure the build and display space
There is no universal fit standard across display-case makers. Measure the assembled set in all three dimensions, including delicate or protruding parts, then measure the shelf or cabinet footprint and available height. Compare those measurements with the case’s internal dimensions rather than its outside dimensions, and allow enough clearance to place and remove the model without catching its features.
Large builds can need unusually tall cases: iDisplayit’s July 30, 2026 article describes LEGO Icons Eiffel Tower (10307) as five feet tall. That is the retailer article’s figure, not a LEGO product specification established here.

Clean the model carefully
LEGO’s official cleaning instructions address bricks and components, not a detailed dusting method for a fragile, fully assembled display. For loose bricks or components, LEGO recommends hand cleaning with water no hotter than 104°F (40°C) and a soft cloth or sponge. Mild detergent is optional; rinse with clear water. For electronics or sensitive pieces containing metal, LEGO advises using a cloth moistened with water and mild detergent without perfume or oil. Read LEGO’s cleaning instructions.
Do not leave bricks in direct sunlight to dry, or dry them with a hair dryer, oven, or microwave. LEGO warns that excessive heat can change their shape. For a delicate assembled model, avoid forceful handling; the cited LEGO guidance does not endorse a particular brush, compressed-air device, or vacuum method for dusting one.
