If a camera stream is blocked on a localhost page, check the browser’s secure-context and permission rules first; valid JavaScript alone cannot grant camera access. Request the camera with getUserMedia(), assign its returned stream to the video element’s srcObject, and use the exact error name to narrow down failures.
Why camera access can be blocked on localhost
getUserMedia() asks the browser for permission to use a media input and, when access is granted, returns a MediaStream containing the requested tracks. Browsers restrict this API to secure contexts. HTTPS is secure, and browsers generally treat localhost as a potentially trustworthy development origin; however, permission settings, page policy, hardware availability, or constraints can still prevent capture. See MDN’s getUserMedia() reference and MDN’s secure-context explanation.
Make sure you are opening the intended local origin. A page served as localhost or 127.0.0.1 is not necessarily equivalent to opening the same server through a LAN IP address or a different hostname. The SitePoint discussion that prompted this question involved a WAMP localhost page and raised the possibility that the page was being opened through an IP address instead. Read the SitePoint discussion.
Display the live stream in a video element
Use srcObject to connect the returned MediaStream to the video element. Do not set the element’s src to a localhost URL: that is a URL, not the camera stream.

<video id="videoElement" autoplay playsinline></video>
<button id="startCamera" type="button">Start camera</button>
<script>
const button = document.querySelector('#startCamera');
const video = document.querySelector('#videoElement');
button.addEventListener('click', async () => {
if (!navigator.mediaDevices?.getUserMedia) {
console.error('Camera capture is unavailable in this document. Check its origin and secure-context status.');
return;
}
try {
const stream = await navigator.mediaDevices.getUserMedia({ video: true });
video.srcObject = stream;
video.autoplay = true;
video.playsInline = true;
} catch (error) {
console.error(error.name, error.message);
}
});
</script>
Starting from a button gives the user a clear action before the browser prompts for permission. The optional check for navigator.mediaDevices helps identify a document where the capture API is unavailable; it does not replace permission handling or error reporting.
Use the error name to find the failure
Log both error.name and error.message. The name often points to the next check more effectively than a generic “camera failed” message.

| Error or symptom | What it indicates | What to check |
|---|---|---|
NotAllowedError |
Access was denied, or the document is not in a permitted secure context. | Check the page origin, browser camera permission, and any relevant page or embedding policy. |
NotFoundError |
No available media track matches the request. | Check that a camera is connected, detected, and available to the browser. |
NotReadableError |
The browser, operating system, hardware, or page could not read the device despite the request being permitted. | Check operating-system camera privacy controls, whether another application is using the camera, and whether the device is functioning. |
OverconstrainedError |
The requested constraints cannot be satisfied by an available device. | Start with { video: true }; remove strict resolution or device requirements and add them back only after basic capture works. |
These meanings are described in MDN’s getUserMedia() documentation. Browser settings can also block access even when the page’s code and origin are otherwise correct.
Choose a local origin and camera request that fit the situation
| Choice | Effort and trade-off | When it helps |
|---|---|---|
localhost or 127.0.0.1 during development |
Usually the quickest local route because these are treated as potentially trustworthy origins. Access can still be blocked by browser permissions, policy, hardware problems, or an unsuitable request. | Start here when testing a site on the same computer and the browser exposes navigator.mediaDevices. |
| A local hostname served over trusted HTTPS | Requires configuring the hostname, web server, and locally trusted certificate. It is a practical route if the browser does not accept the current origin as secure. | Use when the local page remains unavailable to the capture API or when your setup needs an HTTPS origin. |
| Built-in camera | Requires a working camera that the operating system and browser can access; no additional camera purchase is needed. | Use the built-in device if it appears to the browser and is not blocked by privacy controls or another application. |
| External USB webcam | Requires compatible hardware and operating-system detection. It can provide another camera to test, but cannot fix an insecure origin or a denied permission. | Consider it only if there is no usable built-in camera or the existing camera is unavailable. |
{ video: true } |
A permissive request avoids specifying a particular resolution or camera, reducing constraint-related failure risk. | Use it to establish that basic video capture works before tuning quality or device selection. |
| Specific resolution or device constraints | More control, but the requested combination may not be supported and can cause OverconstrainedError. |
Add constraints incrementally after a basic stream succeeds. |
Troubleshoot in this order
- Confirm the address bar. Test the intended
localhostor127.0.0.1address rather than assuming a LAN IP or another hostname has the same security status. - Check API availability. In the page’s developer console, evaluate
navigator.mediaDevices. If it is undefined, investigate whether the document is in a secure context. - Request a basic stream from a user action. Use
getUserMedia({ video: true })and catch the rejection so its name and message are visible. - Check permissions and device access. Review the browser’s site settings for camera permission, the operating system’s camera privacy controls, and whether another application is occupying the camera.
- Serve the site over locally trusted HTTPS if needed. Configure a local hostname and certificate in Apache, NGINX, or the server you use, then open the page at that hostname. A certificate by itself does not configure the web server or grant camera permission.
- Separate capture from presentation. Once the stream is attached, address sizing and orientation with CSS rather than changing the media-capture call.
Fix vertical video or controls with CSS
If the camera works but the video or controls appear vertically arranged, treat that as a layout issue. The SitePoint reply identifies page layout as the likely cause of the reported vertical controls; changing the capture API will not correct CSS.

- Inspect the video element’s width and height and the dimensions of its parent.
- Check whether the parent uses flexbox or grid rules that stack its children.
- Look for an inherited or applied
writing-modethat changes text or control orientation. - Review global rules targeting
video, controls, or their containers, including fixed dimensions that cause unexpected wrapping.
video {
display: block;
width: 100%;
max-width: 640px;
height: auto;
}
.camera-container {
writing-mode: horizontal-tb;
}
Adjust the container rules to match the page design; the example sets a responsive maximum width and normal horizontal writing mode, but it cannot override every conflicting stylesheet.
