To hide the language selector on the standard WordPress login screen, add add_filter( 'login_display_language_dropdown', '__return_false' ); to a site-specific plugin or your active child theme’s functions.php. WordPress introduced this filter in version 5.9.0; it controls whether the built-in login selector is displayed.

Hide the selector with a WordPress filter

Add this PHP code to a small site-specific plugin or the active child theme’s functions.php:

add_filter( 'login_display_language_dropdown', '__return_false' );

The WordPress hook reference describes login_display_language_dropdown as filtering whether the language selector appears on the login screen. Returning false prevents the standard login template from displaying it.

Choose where the code loads

  • Site-specific plugin: Keeps the behavior independent of the active theme. Use this if the setting should remain in effect when you change themes.
  • Child theme: Add the filter to the child theme’s functions.php if the change belongs with that theme. Avoid editing a parent theme, because an update can overwrite the change.

Do not edit WordPress core files.

Test the change on your login page

  1. Save the code in the site-specific plugin or active child theme where it will load for login requests.
  2. Open the standard WordPress login page in a private browser window.
  3. Confirm that the language selector is absent.

If it remains visible, check whether a plugin or custom login implementation replaces the standard WordPress login footer or renders its own selector. The core filter applies to the built-in rendering path; it does not guarantee behavior for third-party login screens.

Hide the control or customize its options?

Use the display filter to remove the selector. If you want the selector to remain visible but need to adjust its select-input arguments, use login_language_dropdown_args instead. WordPress passes the arguments through this filter before calling wp_dropdown_languages(), as shown in the hook reference and the login_footer() reference.
