These are different controls: disabling camera use for AI does not necessarily disable ordinary photo and video capture. The instructions below are specific to Ray-Ban Meta; controls vary across smart-glasses brands and models.
Choose what you want to stop
Ray-Ban Meta separates voice interaction, camera input to AI, follow-up listening, and the glasses’ overall power state. Use the control that matches your goal:

| Meta AI camera use | Stops camera input for AI requests about what you are viewing; it is distinct from taking photos or videos with the glasses. |
| Respond without “Hey Meta” | Stops the setting that keeps the microphone active briefly after a request to allow a follow-up. |
| Physical power switch | Turns off the glasses rather than just limiting a particular AI feature. |
Turn off Voice Control
- Open the Meta AI app.
- Go to Settings, then choose Voice.
- Toggle Voice Control off.
Meta’s FAQ describes Voice Control as an opt-in setting. Do not assume this toggle disables every microphone function used by the hardware.
Stop camera input to Meta AI
- In the Meta AI app, open Settings.
- Choose Meta AI. Depending on the app layout, you may need to select your device first, then choose Meta AI.
- Turn off the Meta AI and/or Camera use toggle shown for your device.
This setting concerns camera-based AI requests—for example, asking Meta AI about a landmark or plant in view. According to the Ray-Ban Meta FAQ, the glasses send a photo to Meta’s cloud for AI processing when you ask about what you are looking at; the app can show the request, image, and response. This is separate from choosing to capture a photo or video for the glasses’ gallery, so do not treat the AI camera toggle as a general camera-off switch.

Turn off follow-up listening
The Respond without “Hey Meta” preference lets the glasses’ microphone remain active briefly after a request so you can ask a follow-up without repeating the wake phrase. Meta says it turns off automatically after a few seconds if there is no follow-up.
- Open Settings in the Meta AI app and go to the Meta AI settings for your glasses.
- Open the Hey Meta preferences.
- Turn off Respond without “Hey Meta”.
To turn off the broader documented voice-control feature, use the separate Voice Control setting above.

Power off the glasses
If you want the device inactive rather than merely limiting an AI feature, slide the switch on the left inner arm all the way left. The Ray-Ban Meta power instructions say the notification LED blinks red when the glasses have turned off.
Understand the two LEDs
The outward-facing capture LED signals camera capture. Meta’s official July 2026 FAQ says, “The capture LED has no off switch.” It also says camera use is disabled if the system detects that the LED has been physically tampered with or destroyed. Do not cover, modify, or try to defeat the indicator.

The inward-facing notification LED communicates device status and has an adjustable brightness setting in the app. Dimming that status light does not turn off or dim the outward-facing capture indicator.
Privacy and data considerations
Meta’s FAQ says photos processed for AI are stored and used to improve Meta products and may be used to train Meta AI with trained reviewers. Meta’s responsible-innovation guidance separately says deleted voice recordings are deleted from future training use. These statements concern different data practices, not a single blanket privacy promise. Review current app privacy controls and Meta’s privacy terms if you have concerns about data handling.

Meta advises asking permission before taking photos or videos of people and avoiding sensitive locations or places where people expect privacy. The capture light can signal capture, but it does not replace consent or applicable local rules. If you need the camera and microphone inactive, power the glasses off and check the manufacturer’s status indication rather than relying on a light’s appearance alone.
