To disable Telnet on an ASUS router, sign in to its Web GUI, open Administration > System, set Enable Telnet to No, and select Apply. Then review the system log for repeated failed logins or SSH keys you do not recognize, and check for unfamiliar connected devices or settings you did not change. Those signs warrant investigation, but none alone proves an attacker accessed the router.
Turn off Telnet in the ASUS Web GUI
- Connect to your router’s local network and open its Web GUI using the router’s LAN IP address or http://www.asusrouter.com. Sign in with the administrator account.
- Go to Administration > System.
- Find Enable Telnet, set it to No, and select Apply if you changed the setting.
ASUS’s walkthrough shows No as the default, but verify the setting on your own router. The documented example uses a ZenWiFi XT8; menus and options can differ by model and software version. ASUS’s Telnet instructions were last updated April 30, 2025.
Review other management access
In the same system settings, check whether SSH and WAN access are enabled. Turn them off if you do not need command-line access or administration over the internet. ASUS says SSH provides encrypted network communication and suggests it over Telnet if command-line access is needed; its security guidance also recommends keeping both Telnet and SSH disabled when remote access is unnecessary. SSH is not risk-free, and most users do not need it.
Some ASUS models offer SSH access choices such as LAN only or LAN & WAN, but options vary by model. Keep WAN administration disabled unless you have a specific need for remote management. ASUS also lists DDNS, AiCloud, and Web Access from WAN among features to disable when they are not needed.

Check for possible unauthorized access
Inspect the system log
Look for repeated login failures and SSH keys you cannot identify. ASUS names these as possible indicators of unauthorized access. A log entry can be a reason to investigate, but it does not by itself identify who made an attempt or establish that anyone successfully accessed the router.
Review connected devices and router settings
Check the connected-client list for devices you do not recognize, and look for router settings that changed without your knowledge. Device names can be ambiguous: a familiar phone or computer may appear under a manufacturer name or an old device name. An unfamiliar label alone is not proof of an intrusion; compare the entry with devices used by people in your home and investigate unexplained changes.

Understand AiProtection alerts
On supported models, AiProtection logs may show that a connected host attempted to reach a malicious server and that the attempt was blocked. That can indicate a potentially infected device on the network; it is not the same as evidence that someone gained router-administrator access. ASUS’s AiProtection log guidance describes the distinction.
If you suspect the router was compromised
ASUS’s stated response is to update the router firmware, factory reset the router, and then set a strong administrator password. A factory reset clears configuration, so be prepared to configure the router and Wi-Fi again. ASUS also recommends disabling unnecessary remote-access features. These are recovery steps, not a forensic examination or proof that a specific device was compromised.

Reduce the chance of future access
- Use a strong router-administrator password that is different from your Wi-Fi password.
- Use WPA2-AES or WPA3 for Wi-Fi security, where supported, and keep router firmware current.
- Leave Telnet, SSH, and WAN administration off when you do not need them.
- Use the router firewall and, if your model supports it, AiProtection. Security features do not replace disabling unneeded management services or reviewing suspicious activity.
ASUS model support and menu labels vary, so consult the support information for your exact router and firmware if you cannot find a setting.
