Switch back to Classic Outlook
Use this method if Classic Outlook is already installed.
- Open New Outlook.
- Find the toggle at the top-right of the Outlook window.
- Select Switch back to classic Outlook.
- Complete Microsoft’s feedback prompt.
This changes the default used at the next launch. It does not remove New Outlook from Windows.
If you only need Classic Outlook for one session, open the same toggle and select Use classic Outlook this time. Classic Outlook opens immediately, but New Outlook remains the default for a later launch.

Open the correct app from Start
After switching, launch it from Start > Outlook (classic). Choose the Outlook entry without the New label. Selecting the New Outlook entry can redirect you back to the newer app.
You can keep both versions available. In Start, right-click Outlook (classic) and choose Pin to taskbar or Pin to Start. Repeat for New Outlook if you want both shortcuts.
Stop Classic Outlook from automatically switching to New Outlook
Some eligible Classic Outlook installations show a setting that controls automatic migration:
- Open Classic Outlook.
- Go to File > Options > General.
- Under New Outlook options, clear Automatically switch me to new Outlook.
- Select OK.
If New Outlook options is not shown, the account or license may not currently be eligible for automatic migration. The toggle may also be absent with some one-time-purchase Office editions, unsupported accounts, or administrator-controlled installations.
Microsoft began automatically moving eligible personal accounts in stages: Microsoft accounts such as Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, MSN.com, and Live.com from October 2024, and third-party accounts such as Gmail and Yahoo from March 2025. Microsoft’s documented automatic-switching scope did not include work or school accounts with an Enterprise plan at that time.
If the switch-back option is missing
Check whether Classic Outlook is installed
Many Windows devices first sold from 2024 onward include New Outlook but not Classic Outlook. If the top-right toggle does not offer a Classic Outlook option, search Start for Outlook (classic).
You can also check for the traditional executable. Classic Outlook uses outlook.exe, whereas New Outlook uses olk.exe. If Classic Outlook is not installed, you must install or reinstall it through an eligible Microsoft 365 or Office installation before the switch-back option can work.
Correct redirection with the registry
If Outlook (classic) is installed but Windows still redirects it to New Outlook, Microsoft documents this troubleshooting change:
- Press
Windows + R, typeregedit, and press Enter. - Go to
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Preferences. - Find the DWORD value named
UseNewOutlook. - Set its Value data to
0. - Close Registry Editor and start Outlook (classic) from Start.
If the value does not exist, create a DWORD (32-bit) Value named UseNewOutlook and set it to 0.
This is a launch-redirection fix, not a universal uninstall or permanent enterprise block. It does not remove the New Outlook package and does not replace organization-wide application or policy controls.
Uninstall New Outlook for a normal user
For a standard user installation, open the Start menu and locate new Outlook for Windows. Expand its arrow or app list, then select Uninstall.

Before uninstalling, confirm that Classic Outlook is installed if you still need a desktop Outlook client. Removing New Outlook does not install the classic application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRemove New Outlook with PowerShell
PowerShell is useful when the normal uninstall entry is missing or when an administrator is preparing a Windows image. Open PowerShell as administrator.
Remove the provisioned package
This removes New Outlook as a provisioned or default app for current and future users on an online Windows image:
Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -AllUsers -Online -PackageName (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.OutlookForWindows).PackageFullName
Remove user-installed copies for all current users
To remove a user-installed AppX copy for all current users, run:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers -Package (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.OutlookForWindows).PackageFullName
The two commands address different installation states. Deprovisioning prevents the package from being treated as a default app for users created later; Remove-AppxPackage removes installed copies for users who already exist.
Check whether New Outlook is installed
Run:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.OutlookForWindows
To find its current installation folder, use:
(Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.OutlookForWindows).InstallLocation
The executable is normally located in a versioned folder similar to:

Prevent New Outlook from returning after removal
Uninstalling the package is not the same as blocking Microsoft Store acquisition. If Windows or a user can acquire the app again through the Store, it may return. Organizations that need a durable block should restrict Microsoft Store access or apply an appropriate device-management policy.
Windows 11
New Outlook is preinstalled on Windows 11 builds later than version 23H2. Microsoft currently documents no supported way to prevent that preinstallation before deployment; remove or deprovision the package after Windows is installed.
On Windows 11 version 23H2, devices that installed the March 2024 Non-Security Preview release or a later cumulative update honor the deprovisioning command without separately removing the Windows Update Orchestrator value at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\Orchestrator\UScheduler_Oobe\OutlookUpdate.
Windows 10
New Outlook was delivered through the optional update released January 28, 2025, and the monthly security update released February 11, 2025. To block that installation route, create the following registry value:
- Open Registry Editor as administrator.
- Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\Orchestrator\UScheduler_Oobe. - Create a String Value named
BlockedOobeUpdaters. - Set its data to
["MS_Outlook"].
Registry changes under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE affect the device, so use an approved deployment process on managed computers.
Remove the old Windows Mail and Calendar app
Windows Mail and Calendar support ended on December 31, 2024. Removing it can block one Mail-and-Calendar migration route, but it does not block every way New Outlook can be installed.

Remove the package for current users with:

Disable automatic migration by policy
In the Microsoft 365 Apps admin center, use Customization > Policy Management > Create. Search for Manage user setting for new Outlook automatic migration and configure it to disable automatic migration.

The corresponding policy registry location is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\office\16.0\outlook\preferences, with this value:
"NewOutlookMigrationUserSetting"=dword:00000000
A value of 0 disables automatic migration and prevents users from changing that setting. A value of 1 enables or enforces automatic migration. This policy does not override an Admin-Controlled Migration to New Outlook policy.
Hide the New Outlook toggle
In the Microsoft 365 Apps admin center, create a policy named Hide the “Try the new Outlook” toggle in Outlook.
The documented per-user registry location is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\General. Set "HideNewOutlookToggle"=dword:00000001.
To enforce it through policy, use HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\office\16.0\outlook\options\general and set "HideNewOutlookToggle"=dword:00000001.
Microsoft documentation currently contains conflicting examples for this value. The detailed Exchange Online access documentation and the policy-enforced example identify 1 as the hide value; use 1 to hide the toggle. Hiding the toggle does not remove New Outlook or prevent a user from obtaining it separately from the Microsoft Store.
Block work or school mailbox access
To prevent a specific Exchange Online mailbox from being used in New Outlook, connect to Exchange Online PowerShell and run:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Set-CASMailbox -Identity <MailboxIdentity> -OneWinNativeOutlookEnabled $false
Verify the result with:
Get-CASMailbox -Identity <MailboxIdentity> | Format-List Name,OneWinNativeOutlookEnabled
You can apply the restriction through an Outlook on the web mailbox policy:
Set-OwaMailboxPolicy -Identity <PolicyIdentity> -OneWinNativeOutlookEnabled $false

To apply it to every OWA mailbox policy:
Get-OwaMailboxPolicy | Set-OwaMailboxPolicy -OneWinNativeOutlookEnabled $false
A blank OneWinNativeOutlookEnabled value is equivalent to $true, so users are unrestricted unless the setting is explicitly disabled. These Exchange controls affect work or school mailboxes and do not hide the Classic Outlook toggle. They do not necessarily stop personal accounts, Gmail, Yahoo, or other accounts from being added to the app; device and installation controls are needed for that.
Useful launch commands
Classic Outlook and New Outlook use different executables and switch formats:
| Application | Executable | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Outlook | outlook.exe |
outlook.exe /safe |
| New Outlook | olk.exe |
olk.exe --profile profilename |
Classic Outlook uses slash switches; New Outlook uses two hyphens. Microsoft documents only one Office startup switch at a time, so do not combine switches unless the specific application documentation supports that combination.

FAQ
Does switching back to Classic Outlook uninstall New Outlook?
No. The applications remain separately installed. The switch changes which Outlook launches by default; use the Start-menu uninstall option or AppX PowerShell commands to remove New Outlook.
Why is the switch-back toggle missing?
Classic Outlook may not be installed, particularly on newer Windows devices that shipped with only New Outlook. The toggle can also be unavailable with one-time-purchase Office editions, unsupported accounts, or administrator-controlled installations.
Does setting UseNewOutlook to 0 permanently block New Outlook?
No. Microsoft documents this registry value as a troubleshooting method for stopping redirection to New Outlook. It is not an uninstall command or a complete organization-wide block.
Can Classic Outlook and New Outlook run at the same time?
Yes. They are separate applications and can run side by side. Pin each application separately from the Start menu so you can launch the intended version.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Will removing New Outlook stop it from being installed again?
Not necessarily. Microsoft Store acquisition, Windows updates, provisioning, and migration routes can reinstall or restore it. Organizations need suitable Store, Windows Update, AppX, or device-management controls.
Does blocking OneWinNativeOutlookEnabled block personal accounts?
Not reliably. That Exchange setting controls access to work or school mailboxes in New Outlook. Preventing personal or third-party accounts generally requires application or device installation controls as well.
