Turn off browser hardware acceleration as a reversible troubleshooting test when you see graphics glitches, flickering, display errors, or crashes. It makes the browser rely less on your graphics processor (GPU) for some work, but software rendering can increase CPU use and make video or graphics less smooth. Change the setting, restart the browser, and check whether the same problem improves.

What hardware acceleration does—and when to disable it

Hardware acceleration lets a browser use the GPU for some display and graphics tasks. In Firefox, Mozilla says it can help display videos, games, and animations while reducing work on the main processor (CPU). A particular combination of browser, GPU, and graphics driver can cause trouble, though: Firefox users may encounter crashes or difficulty displaying text or other page objects. That makes disabling acceleration a useful diagnostic test, not proof that the GPU is defective.

Turning it off shifts some work to software rendering. Microsoft notes that software rendering of video, WebGL, and canvas content increases CPU usage; depending on the computer and content, that can also make playback or graphics less smooth. If the setting makes no difference—or makes performance worse—turn it back on.

Turn off hardware acceleration in Google Chrome

  1. Open the Chrome menu and choose Settings.
  2. Open System.
  3. Switch off Use hardware acceleration when available.
  4. Restart Chrome, then try to reproduce the problem.

Google includes this setting among steps for troubleshooting crashes and other problems, but it does not guarantee a fix. If the issue continues, check whether the page works in another browser and whether disabling extensions changes the result. Google’s Chrome troubleshooting guidance covers these checks.

Turn off hardware acceleration in Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open the Firefox menu, choose Settings, then select General.
  2. Scroll to Performance and clear Use recommended performance settings. This reveals the additional acceleration option.
  3. Clear Use hardware acceleration when available.
  4. Quit Firefox and start it again, then retest the same issue.

Firefox may hide the acceleration option when its graphics driver is incompatible. If the problem persists, Mozilla recommends checking or updating the graphics driver through the computer or graphics-card maker’s official channel. Its guidance also describes disabling WebGL in persistent cases, but changing advanced about:config preferences is not a first step: Mozilla warns such changes can affect stability, security, and performance. See Mozilla’s troubleshooting steps, Firefox performance settings, and Mozilla’s graphics-driver guidance.

Turn off hardware acceleration in Microsoft Edge

  1. Enter edge://settings/system in the address bar to open Edge’s system settings.
  2. Look for the graphics-acceleration toggle. Its wording and location can vary by Edge version; the label may be Use graphics acceleration when available.
  3. Switch it off and restart Edge.
  4. Reproduce the issue. To inspect Edge’s graphics status, enter edge://gpu in the address bar and review Graphics Feature Status.

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance says to check the driver and acceleration setting when graphics are rendered in software. Its video-playback guidance also recommends toggling graphics acceleration and restarting Edge as a troubleshooting step. See Microsoft’s Edge performance guidance and Edge video-playback troubleshooting.

How to judge the test and what to try next

  1. Change only the acceleration setting. Avoid changing several things at once so you can tell whether this test affected the symptom.
  2. Restart the browser fully. Then repeat the same action, page, or playback that triggered the problem.
  3. Compare the result. If the glitch or crash improves, acceleration or its interaction with the driver may be involved. If there is no improvement, or CPU load and smoothness worsen, turn acceleration back on.
  4. Investigate other causes. Check for a graphics-driver update from the computer or GPU maker, test another browser, and consider whether an extension or a particular page is responsible. A successful test does not establish a permanent fix or identify a defective component.

Browser labels and menu paths can change between releases. If a named setting is not where described, use the browser’s settings search or the internal address provided above where available.
