You do not need to configure or disconnect an AI Gateway to turn off GitLab AI features. Use GitLab Duo availability controls for the scope you want, and separately disable selected AI-native features or Agent Platform experiences if needed. The available settings depend on whether you use GitLab Self-Managed or GitLab.com and on your GitLab version.

Choose the right control for your GitLab installation

GitLab Duo availability and AI Gateway configuration solve different problems. Availability controls whether users can access Duo features; the gateway configuration concerns how requests are routed or which models are hosted. GitLab documents the GitLab.com AI Gateway as the default path for Self-Managed Duo configuration and also documents a self-hosted gateway option. Changing gateway configuration alone is not documented as a way to disable user-facing features. Start with the availability controls instead.

The supported scope varies by product: Self-Managed supports instance, group or subgroup, and project controls; GitLab.com supports group or subgroup and project controls. See GitLab’s GitLab Duo availability instructions for the current options.

Goal Control to use Scope or effect
Turn off Duo across a Self-Managed instance and prevent child-level overrides Set GitLab Duo availability to Always off Instance-wide, locked against child settings
Turn off Duo for a group, subgroup, or project Use the GitLab Duo availability setting at that supported scope Group/subgroup or project; changes may cascade
Disable a particular AI-native feature Set that feature to Disabled in AI-native features configuration Selected feature
Hide Agent Platform experiences Turn off Agent Platform availability Agent Platform settings and related experiences

Turn off GitLab Duo for a Self-Managed instance

For an instance-wide lockout, use Always off, not merely Off by default. GitLab’s availability implementation documentation distinguishes these states: Always off prevents child entities from overriding the parent setting, while Off by default does not lock child settings.

  1. Sign in as a GitLab administrator.
  2. Go to Admin > GitLab Duo > Change configuration.
  3. Set GitLab Duo availability to Always off.
  4. Save the configuration.

For the distinction between ordinary and locked availability states, see GitLab’s GitLab Duo Feature Availability and Configuration.

Turn off Duo for a group or project

If you do not administer the whole Self-Managed instance, or only need to change access in part of the hierarchy, use the relevant group, subgroup, or project’s GitLab Duo settings. On GitLab.com, the top-level group owner manages availability; settings can cascade to child groups and projects. GitLab says a change can take up to 10 minutes to take effect.

  1. Go to Admin > GitLab Duo > Configure models for GitLab Duo > AI-native features.
  2. Find the feature you want to turn off.
  3. Choose Disabled for that feature.
  4. Save the change if the page prompts you to do so.

Do not treat an unassigned model as an off switch. GitLab states in its self-hosted models configuration documentation: “GitLab Duo features remain turned on even if you have not chosen a model for a feature.”

Turn off Agent Platform separately

Agent Platform availability has its own control. If your goal includes hiding or disabling Agent Platform experiences, turn off its availability separately from GitLab Duo availability. In Self-Managed, the setting is under Admin > GitLab Duo > Change configuration. GitLab says turning it off hides related settings for flows and foundational agents and the AI Catalog; the exact items can differ by offering and version. Follow the relevant Agent Platform availability instructions for your installation.

Check your GitLab version before following a menu path

GitLab publishes separate instructions for earlier releases, so the current menu paths should not be assumed to apply to every version. For GitLab versions 17.7–18.1, 17.4–17.6, or 17.3 and earlier, use the matching section of GitLab Duo availability instructions for earlier versions.

When feature flags are relevant

Self-Managed administrators can disable particular features deployed behind feature flags through the Rails console or Feature Flags API. This is a targeted mechanism for flagged features, not a general substitute for supported Duo availability controls. Use it only when the feature is controlled by a flag and the supported availability settings do not address the specific need. GitLab documents the process in Enable and disable GitLab features deployed behind feature flags.
