Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo remove the Microsoft Copilot app from Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Copilot, select More options (…) > Uninstall, and confirm if prompted. If you only want to remove its shortcut, unpin it from Start or the taskbar instead. You can also change what the Copilot keyboard key opens on supported devices. These actions affect different parts of Windows, and uninstalling the app does not disable Copilot in Microsoft 365 or on the web.
Which Copilot do you want to disable?
Windows 11’s desktop program is the Microsoft Copilot app. Microsoft says it may be available from Start or the taskbar and may come installed by default on new Windows 11 PCs. Microsoft’s Copilot app overview describes its Windows, web, and mobile experiences.
That app is only one way to access Copilot. Microsoft 365 apps have separate Copilot controls, and what is available depends on your account and app version. Removing the Windows app does not turn off Copilot in Word, Excel, Outlook, Edge, or other Microsoft products. Microsoft’s guidance for turning off Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps covers those separate controls.
| Option | What changes | Use it when |

| Hide or unpin | Removes a visible Start or taskbar entry, but leaves the app installed. | You want a cleaner Start menu or taskbar. |
| Reassign the Copilot key | Changes the key’s launch action on supported devices; available choices vary. | The keyboard key launches Copilot when you do not want it to. |

On supported configurations, taskbar visibility options are under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. Microsoft’s pages on accessing Copilot on Windows and managing Copilot settings in Windows describe its available entry points and taskbar controls.

Change what the Copilot key opens
On supported devices, Windows provides a setting to customize the Copilot key. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard > Customize Copilot key on keyboard, then select one of the choices shown for your device. Microsoft lists possibilities such as Search, Microsoft Copilot, Custom, and Copilot, but the choices and default can vary. Its guidance also notes that enabling Copilot in Taskbar settings can override the keyboard choice. Check Microsoft’s keyboard-setting guidance for details.

Microsoft’s consumer guidance explains how to uninstall the app, but it does not promise that the app can never return after an update or another reinstall or provisioning event. The documented user-facing option is to uninstall it; there is no confirmed all-build guarantee against it reappearing. If you see the app again, check Settings > Apps > Installed apps and repeat the uninstall steps if Copilot is listed.

If you still encounter a Copilot feature but the app is not listed, identify where it appears—such as the taskbar, keyboard, Edge, Microsoft 365, or the web. Those are separate products or entry points, not proof that the Windows app remains installed.
On a work or school PC managed by an organization, ask your IT administrator about the device’s rules. The consumer instructions here do not establish how enterprise policies are configured or whether they override your settings.
