If an Xbox-app or Microsoft Store game on your Windows PC pauses while it prepares shaders, let that process finish, check for Windows and graphics-driver updates, restart if needed, then replay the same scene. If the stutter continues, first identify when it happens: shader compilation is one possible cause, not a diagnosis for every freeze or uneven frame rate.

This guide is for games installed and played locally on Windows through the Xbox app or Microsoft Store. It separates likely shader-related pauses from other stutter causes and gives you a free troubleshooting order before you consider hardware.

What causes shader-compilation pauses in an Xbox game on PC?

A game needs graphics shaders—small programs that describe how effects such as lighting, materials, and shadows should be rendered—to run on your graphics hardware. Depending on the game and its delivery system, some shader work may happen before play and some may happen just in time when a new effect is encountered. That work can interrupt frame delivery, making the game hitch or pause.

Microsoft describes launch-time and just-in-time shader compilation as possible sources of delay. It also explains that precompiling shaders can reduce the just-in-time work that causes gameplay stutter in its Advanced Shader Delivery overview. But a pause alone does not establish that compilation is responsible. Video-memory paging, resource management, and frame queuing can also produce stutter; NVIDIA discusses these as distinct possible mechanisms in its Stuttering in Game Graphics presentation.

A hitch that appears the first time you encounter an effect may be consistent with just-in-time compilation, while one that keeps recurring in a familiar scene points to a broader diagnosis. Neither pattern proves the cause. Record what you observe before changing settings so you can compare the same game section after each troubleshooting step.

What should I note before troubleshooting?

Write down the game, whether it was installed through the Xbox app or Microsoft Store, your Windows version, GPU model, and graphics-driver version. Also note whether the game displayed a shader-preparation indicator, whether the hitch followed a driver update, and whether the same scene hitches again on a later run.

  • When it happens: during startup, after a driver change, the first time a particular effect appears, or repeatedly in the same section.
  • What it looks and feels like: an isolated pause, recurring short hitches, or generally uneven motion despite a high displayed frame rate. NVIDIA uses descriptions such as a game hitching every few seconds and a high frame rate that still does not feel smooth as examples of stutter symptoms; they are illustrative, not proof of a particular cause.
  • What changed: a Windows or graphics-driver update, a graphics-setting change, or a different display mode.

Change one thing at a time and replay the same scene. If you change several settings together, it becomes harder to tell which change mattered—or whether the pattern changed at all.

What should I try first when a game is preparing shaders?

If the game visibly says it is preparing or processing shaders, allow it to finish before playing. Repeatedly interrupting that work can leave you without a meaningful comparison between a completed preparation run and the gameplay that follows.

Intel’s guidance for its specific Intel Arc post-driver-update scenario says shader processing can take several minutes, depending on the game and configuration. It advises waiting until the displayed process reaches 100%. That percentage indicator and timing apply to the documented scenario, not to every game or graphics card. For that Arc-driver-update case, Intel says performance should stabilize after processing completes and return to normal without further action; do not generalize this promise to recurring stutter with other causes. See Intel’s Arc stutter guidance.

Once preparation is complete, replay the scene that prompted the problem. If the hitch is gone, you may have encountered work associated with that preparation or with first-time rendering. If it remains, continue below instead of assuming another shader run—or a cache-clearing utility—is the answer.

How do I update Windows and my graphics driver safely?

Check Windows Update and the official update channel for the manufacturer of your active graphics hardware. Install relevant updates, follow any restart prompt, and then compare the same part of the game. There is no universal graphics-driver version that can be prescribed for every PC and title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check Windows: Open Windows Settings and check Windows Update for available updates. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting documentation covers the update route and common update problems.
  2. Identify the active GPU: If you do not know which graphics device the game is using, check Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics as described in the next section. A system may have both integrated and discrete graphics.
  3. Use the GPU maker’s official channel: Check its driver-update information for your GPU. NVIDIA, for example, publishes its Game Ready driver channel; that is an official update source, not a guarantee that any particular driver fixes a particular game.
  4. Restart when required: Complete the restart requested by Windows or the driver installer before judging the result.
  5. Retest consistently: Load the same scene and use the same relevant graphics settings. Note whether the hitch changes, disappears, or recurs.

Updates are a sensible early check, but they do not establish that the original cause was a shader bug. If the exact same hitch persists after preparation is complete and updates are applied, investigate the pattern and other possible rendering or resource causes.

How do I make sure the game uses the intended GPU?

On a PC with integrated and discrete graphics, Windows lets you set a per-app GPU preference. If the game is assigned to integrated graphics unexpectedly, try the High performance preference for its app entry and restart the game before comparing.

  1. Open Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Find the game in the app list. If it is not listed, use the available option to add a desktop app and select the game’s executable; the exact file depends on the installed game.
  3. Open the game’s graphics preference and choose High performance, if that option is available.
  4. Save the preference, close and restart the game, then replay the same scene.

This changes Windows’ per-app GPU preference. It does not rewrite the game’s shader code or ensure that a game-engine defect will be corrected. If the game already uses the intended GPU, this setting may not change the stutter.

Could the Xbox app be the problem?

If the Xbox app itself is failing to open, install, or launch properly, try its Windows app repair option. Repairing the launcher is a way to address an app problem; it is not a shader-compilation fix and does not establish that an individual game’s files have been verified.

  1. Open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Select Xbox, open its Advanced options, and choose Repair if the option is offered.
  3. Reopen the app and check whether the launcher problem is resolved.
  4. Consider Reset only if Repair does not help and the option is available. Reset is a stronger app-level step; check the app’s own guidance before proceeding.

Microsoft notes that not every app offers Repair or Reset. Available controls can vary, so do not assume you will see every option. There is no universal, verified Xbox-app menu path established here for checking or repairing every installed game’s files; use the specific game’s support guidance for that question rather than treating launcher repair as file verification.

Should I turn on Optimizations for windowed games?

Only consider this Windows 11 setting when the game uses DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 and runs in windowed or borderless mode. Microsoft’s documented scope is windowed-game presentation for those APIs; it is not a documented fix for DirectX 12 shader compilation.

Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games setting may be relevant to how a supported game presents frames. Compare the game in the applicable windowed or borderless mode with the setting changed, then retest the same scene. Treat any change as a display-presentation result—not evidence that shader compilation itself has been fixed. If the game uses DirectX 12, this feature’s documented scope does not make it the right shader-stutter remedy.

Should I clear the shader cache?

Do not routinely wipe a working shader cache just because a game stutters. Microsoft’s Direct3D 12 sample explains that stored pipeline states can avoid repeating costly compilation on later runs. Clearing cached material can therefore bring back initial compilation work, even though that caution does not prove every cache is healthy or rule out a game-specific cache problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a game’s official support instructions specifically call for a cache reset as part of resolving a known issue, follow those instructions and understand that the next run may have to rebuild shader or pipeline data. Otherwise, start with completed shader preparation, updates, and pattern diagnosis rather than a blanket cache-clearing step.

Can precompiled shaders prevent stutter in Xbox-app games?

Precompiled-shader systems can reduce work on a player’s PC, but eligibility depends on the particular system and game integration. You cannot assume that an Xbox-app installation receives a given cache feature simply because the same game is available in another storefront.

Microsoft Advanced Shader Delivery

Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) is designed to move shader work off the player’s device and deliver precompiled results with a game download. Microsoft says precompiling shaders can reduce just-in-time compilation that causes gameplay stutter. ASD requires supported Windows, GPU and driver combinations, plus storefront integration by the game or store. It is not a universal Windows switch that a player can force on for any Xbox-app title. Eligibility and availability should be established for the specific game and setup in Microsoft’s ASD documentation.

Intel’s precompiled-shader feature

Intel describes a separate precompiled-shader feature with its own supported hardware and driver requirements. The feature is disabled by default on supported systems, and its precompiled-cache function is restricted to supported Steam-installed games. A Steam-specific setting is not an Xbox-app remedy just because a title is sold in both stores.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Intel’s documentation, last reviewed March 16, 2026, says its supported feature typically uses under 100 MB of cached shader files per game. It also reports initial loading that is typically 20–50% faster, varying by game and configuration. Those are Intel’s figures for its supported feature—not a benchmark of Xbox-app games, a universal cache-size estimate, or a promise that gameplay stutter will disappear. See Intel’s Precompiled Shaders information for its stated scope.

How can I tell shader stutter from video-memory pressure?

Look for clues in when the hitch occurs and what the game is doing, but treat them as leads rather than conclusive tests. A pause around a new effect or shader-preparation event is consistent with compilation; hitches during a memory-intensive workload may instead point toward video-memory pressure or another resource issue.

NVIDIA identifies video-memory paging separately from shader compilation as a possible stutter mechanism. Paging can occur when the game and graphics workload put pressure on available video memory; resource management and frame queuing are other possibilities. A repeated hitch in a familiar scene therefore merits a broader diagnosis rather than repeated shader waits alone. A symptom description such as a high frame rate that still feels uneven also does not identify the cause by itself.

Only consider new graphics hardware after establishing that video-memory pressure is relevant to your workload. More video memory does not remove a game’s shader-compilation problem or repair an engine defect. For context, NVIDIA lists the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti in distinct 8 GB and 16 GB variants. If you are evaluating that example specifically because measured video-memory capacity is the issue, verify the exact 16 GB variant and confirm physical, power, and system compatibility before purchase. The listed capacity is not evidence that the card cures shader stutter.

Does Xbox mode on Windows fix shader pauses?

No shader-compilation remedy is established by Microsoft’s Xbox mode information. Microsoft documents Xbox mode for Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer in supported markets, including a background-process benefit on handheld startup. That scope is not a promise to eliminate shader compilation or recurring stutter in a Windows PC game.

What should I do if the stutter keeps happening?

If the game still hitches after visible preparation has completed and Windows and the graphics driver are up to date, use the recorded pattern to narrow the next step. Check the game’s support guidance for a known title-specific issue, then consider whether the symptom better fits video-memory paging or another rendering-resource problem than first-time shader work.

  • Hitch happens only around first encounters: compare a later run of the same scene after preparation, without treating one better run as proof of the cause.
  • Hitch began after a driver update: note the driver and game versions and check the GPU maker’s official guidance for that configuration. Intel’s Arc-specific post-update advice applies to its documented processing scenario, not to all GPU vendors.
  • Hitch recurs in familiar play: check whether the scene is especially demanding on video memory or other resources, and consult the game’s support information.
  • Launcher malfunction is separate: use the Xbox app’s Repair option if available, but do not infer that it verifies or repairs the installed game’s files.

A generic optimizer, cache deletion, graphics-card purchase, or Xbox mode should not be treated as a guaranteed fix. The useful next action depends on the repeatable pattern and the cause that the available evidence supports.

How were the troubleshooting steps chosen?

The sequence starts with no-cost, low-risk checks: record the symptom, finish visible preparation, update Windows and the appropriate driver, and retest consistently. It then separates launcher issues and GPU selection from rendering behavior, limits display-mode advice to Microsoft’s documented DirectX 10/11 windowed scope, and reserves hardware consideration for diagnosed video-memory pressure. It does not assume that all Xbox-app titles support a precompiled-shader feature or that every pause is caused by compilation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I force Microsoft Advanced Shader Delivery on for a game?

No general player-facing toggle is established for forcing it on. Availability depends on the supported Windows, GPU, driver, and storefront integration for the specific game.

Will reinstalling an Xbox game rebuild its shaders?

The available guidance does not establish a universal relationship between reinstalling an Xbox-app game and rebuilding its shader data. Check the game’s official support instructions before reinstalling, especially if you want to preserve settings or local data.

Does a high FPS counter rule out stutter?

No. A reported frame rate does not by itself describe how evenly frames are delivered or identify the source of a hitch. NVIDIA’s stutter presentation includes uneven-feeling motion despite a high frame rate as an illustrative symptom.

Is Intel’s 20–50% loading improvement typical for Xbox-app games?

No. Intel reports that range for its supported precompiled-shader feature, with results varying by game and configuration. Its documented precompiled-cache feature is limited to supported Steam installs, so the figure is not an Xbox-app benchmark.
