What counts as a silent behavior change?
A behavior change is a meaningful difference in how an API performs your application’s tasks: for example, lower answer correctness, broken output formatting, different tool selection, or a change in refusal behavior. It may follow a model or backend update, but an observed shift can also come from a changed prompt, request parameters, routing, application code, input mix, evaluator, or ordinary sampling variation.
OpenAI’s model-optimization guidance warns that behavior can change between model snapshots and model families and recommends measuring and tuning applications. That supports monitoring outcomes rather than assuming a model identifier alone guarantees unchanged behavior: OpenAI model optimization guidance.
Build an evaluation that reflects real use
Choose representative tasks and failure modes
Start with the work users actually ask your application to do, including examples that have previously exposed problems. Cover consequential requirements such as correctness, completeness, instruction adherence, required fields, tool choice, handoffs, safety criteria, and output format. Include varied, realistic inputs rather than a set made up only of easy or synthetic cases.

Turn requirements into criteria
Use exact checks for requirements that can be stated precisely, such as whether a response parses as JSON or contains required keys. Use a grader or human review for qualities that require judgment, such as relevance or whether an answer is complete. Keep each criterion tied to a user-visible requirement; a score is only useful if it measures something your application needs.
OpenAI’s Evals guide describes test data and testing criteria or graders as core parts of an evaluation, and recommends evals because ordinary software tests alone do not capture the variability of generative AI. The guide states: “Writing evals to understand how your LLM applications are performing against your expectations, especially when upgrading or trying new models, is an essential component of building reliable applications.” See OpenAI’s Evals guide.

Preserve a comparable baseline
For each run, preserve the context needed to tell whether two results are genuinely comparable. Version the evaluation examples and criteria along with the prompt, system instructions, model identifier, request parameters, tool definitions, routing configuration, and application code. Record response identifiers and backend metadata returned by the API when available. Store and retain this information only in ways permitted by your privacy, security, and service-retention requirements.
Without that context, a changed score may be caused by a change in your own request or evaluation rather than by the model. Keep the before-and-after examples for failures as well as aggregate results so an investigation can focus on what changed in practice.

Rerun consistently, accounting for variability
Run the same evaluation set against the production configuration on a cadence proportionate to the risk of the application, and after changes to the model, prompt, tools, or routing. For a stochastic task, repeat samples or compare aggregated scores instead of treating one output as definitive. Establish thresholds around user impact and your service requirements; there is no universal score or alert threshold that fits every application.
For OpenAI API calls, the Cookbook recommends using the same seed and keeping other parameters the same to receive “mostly deterministic outputs.” It explicitly warns that determinism is not guaranteed. The system_fingerprint can help identify backend configuration changes, but it is not a guarantee of identical output or a universal model-version oracle. Compare outcomes, contracts, and workflows
Compare more than the wording of individual responses. Choose measures that match the application, and look at both aggregate shifts and examples of failures.
- Task outcomes: correctness, completeness, relevance, safety, and other product-specific quality requirements.
- Interface contract: parse success, schema validity, required fields, tool-call structure, and expected error handling.
- Identity and configuration: model name or snapshot, available response metadata, prompt and parameters, tool definitions, routing, and application deployment.
- Operational quality: latency and errors, plus cost when it matters to the service. Set thresholds from your own requirements rather than assuming one standard applies.
- Agent workflow: tool selection, handoffs, guardrail behavior, instruction following, and the end-to-end result.
For agentic applications, inspect end-to-end traces rather than only the final answer. A final response can look plausible even when an agent chose the wrong tool, mishandled a handoff, or failed a guardrail along the way. Investigate a drift alert before blaming the provider
- Confirm the comparison is valid. Check that the evaluation inputs, criteria, graders, and aggregation method did not change between runs.
- Compare the requests and deployment. Check model identifiers, prompts, parameters, tools, routing, and application code for differences.
- Review returned metadata. Where available, compare response identifiers and
system_fingerprint. A changed fingerprint is a useful clue about backend configuration, not proof by itself of a particular cause. - Inspect the failures. Review before-and-after examples and categorize the problem—for example, incorrect answers, invalid output, a tool-selection regression, or a change in refusal behavior.
- Choose and document a response. Decide whether the shift is acceptable, calls for a prompt or application adjustment, warrants a provider inquiry, or requires rollback or routing changes. Record the evidence and decision so the next investigation has a usable baseline.
A threshold crossing is a signal to investigate, not automatic proof that a provider silently changed a model. Inputs, software, settings, backend configuration, and normal variation can all affect observed results.
Provider-specific limits to keep in mind
Metadata and reproducibility features differ among providers; do not assume another API exposes OpenAI’s system_fingerprint or offers the same seed behavior. The cited guidance does not establish a provider-wide guarantee of advance notice for behavior changes, nor does it quantify how often silent changes occur. Treat monitoring as your way to detect changes that affect your application, not as a promise that a provider will announce every change.
OpenAI’s Evals guide also announces that its Evals platform is scheduled to become read-only for existing users on October 31, 2026, and to shut down on November 30, 2026; it points users toward Datasets for newer experimentation. These dates concern that platform, not the underlying practice of defining test data and criteria. Check the current guide before relying on platform availability: OpenAI’s Evals guide.
