Short answer: Your phone can scan for some nearby Bluetooth or Wi-Fi signals, but it cannot reliably detect every hidden cell phone. A scan that finds nothing does not prove that no phone is present. Built-in unwanted-tracker alerts are useful for compatible Bluetooth item trackers—not as a general detector for phones.
What your phone can—and cannot—detect
Phones can use Bluetooth and other wireless signals, but a scan only reveals devices or signals that are available to your phone under its current radio state, software, permissions, and surroundings. Apple describes Location Services as using information from cellular, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth networks to determine location; that is not the same as identifying every nearby phone. Apple’s Find My network illustrates the distinction. Nearby Apple devices can detect Bluetooth signals from a participating missing device and report an approximate location to its owner. This is a platform service for participating devices, not a general-purpose scan that lets you find any phone nearby. Details are in Apple Platform Security’s Find My security overview.
A phone may not be advertising a discoverable signal; its wireless radios may be off, the signal may be out of usable range, or an obstruction may interfere. These are limits of signal-based methods, not a measured detection rate. The official documentation does not establish that an ordinary phone can reliably detect arbitrary hidden phones.

How to check for a Bluetooth item tracker
If you suspect an AirTag or another compatible Bluetooth tracking device, use the unwanted-tracker features designed for that purpose. They detect a defined class of trackers and should not be mistaken for a scan for cell phones.
- Check your phone’s operating-system support. Apple says compatible unwanted-tracking notifications are available on iPhone with iOS 17.5 or later, and Android 6.0 or later provides unwanted-tracker detection. Availability depends on the device, OS version, and accessory compatibility. See Apple’s Detect unwanted trackers guide.
- Use the built-in alert or manual scan. Follow the instructions for your platform. Apple’s guidance covers AirTags, AirPods, Find My network accessories, and compatible Bluetooth location-tracking devices; it also says Android 6.0 or later can automatically notify users and run a manual scan for unknown item trackers. - Follow the result as a tracker alert, not a phone finding. An alert concerns a compatible tracker and does not identify every nearby phone, establish who owns a device, or prove that a phone is present or absent.
Why Bluetooth or Wi-Fi scans are not a reliable hidden-phone test
General scanning apps and phone settings can show only signals their device and software can access. They do not establish that every phone in a room is transmitting a signal that the scan can see. A negative result therefore cannot demonstrate that no hidden phone is present.

Permissions and operating-system behavior matter. Apple says apps on iOS 13 and later must request Bluetooth permission, except for audio playback to a Bluetooth device. Android’s Android 10 privacy documentation says some Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Aware, and Bluetooth scanning methods require fine location permission. The exact access available depends on the OS and permissions; see Android’s Android 10 privacy documentation.
Do not rely on an app’s promise to find every hidden phone, identify its owner, or locate it when it is powered down or radio-silent. The official platform sources describe signal-based features and tracker alerts, not those capabilities.

If you are worried about unwanted tracking
Use the platform’s tracker guidance if you suspect a compatible item tracker. Apple’s personal-safety guidance points readers in some locations, including the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, to regional safety organizations in the context of suspected unwanted tracking. For a concern involving a hidden phone rather than a tracker, seek locally appropriate help. The sources cited here do not establish jurisdiction-specific rules for searching a room or vehicle.
