To descale an electric kettle, use the cleaning method, solution strength and soak time specified in its manual. Manufacturers differ: one may call for vinegar left unheated, while another instructs you to boil a vinegar-and-water mixture. Citric acid is also an option for some kettles, but its amount and treatment time are model-specific. Empty the solution and rinse thoroughly before using the kettle again.
What the white or chalky buildup is
Limescale is mineral buildup left behind as water is heated. Fellow describes it as primarily calcium carbonate and says the rate depends on the mineral concentration in the water. Deposits are often light-colored, but appearance can vary: Tefal notes that deposits may look brown or black where water has a high iron content. Color alone does not establish that a deposit is dirt or rust.
Some mineral buildup is an ordinary consequence of using a kettle. As Fellow puts it, “Limescale or mineral deposits are a direct result of heating up water and thus inevitable in all kettles.” Fellow’s cleaning and descaling guidance
How to descale your kettle safely
- Check the kettle’s manual first. Use its approved descaler or household method, and follow the specified quantity, whether to heat the solution, and soak time. Manufacturer instructions differ, so do not combine steps from different models.
- Prepare only the approved solution. Measure the ingredients and water carefully. Do not exceed the kettle’s fill limit.
- Let the solution work as directed. Some instructions call for heating; others specify an unheated soak. Do not assume that boiling is required.
- Empty the kettle and rinse it thoroughly. If the manual gives a specific number of rinses, follow it. Do not leave descaling solution in the kettle for longer than directed.
- Keep electrical parts dry. Never immerse the kettle, electrical base, cord or plug in water. Avoid steel wool and abrasive brushes that could damage the interior; Fellow recommends a sponge or soft brush.
For example, Tefal’s instructions for the ELEMENT KETTLE KI280D27 specify five or six rinses after descaling. That is guidance for the cited product, not a universal rinse count.

Vinegar and citric acid: use the method for your model
Both vinegar and citric acid appear in manufacturer guidance, but their quantities and procedures are not interchangeable. The examples below illustrate why the kettle’s own instructions take priority.
| Manufacturer and product scope | Vinegar method | Citric-acid method |
|---|---|---|
| Tefal, ELEMENT KETTLE KI280D27 | Use 500 ml of commercial 8° white vinegar; leave for one hour without heating. | Boil 500 ml of water, add 25 g of citric acid, then leave for 15 minutes. |
| Fellow, Fellow electric kettles | Use equal parts vinegar and water, heat to a boil, then leave for at least 30 minutes. | Mix two spoonfuls of citric acid with 500 ml water, bring to a boil, then leave for at least 30 minutes. |
These are the respective manufacturers’ instructions, not general recipes for every kettle. Check the exact product guidance: Tefal’s KI280D27 instructions and Fellow’s kettle guidance.

Choosing between vinegar and citric acid
When your manual permits either method, scent may help you choose: Fellow says citric acid has less lingering scent than vinegar. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that one option is universally safer or more effective. Use only a method compatible with your kettle and follow its exact directions.
Using a purpose-made descaler
A kettle descaler is another option where the kettle manufacturer allows it. Follow both the kettle’s instructions and the descaler label. De’Longhi warns that proprietary descaler can damage the surface finish if directions are not followed.

How often to descale
Descaling frequency depends on water hardness: harder water generally leads to more mineral buildup. De’Longhi recommends monthly descaling for particularly hard water and every three months in very soft-water areas. These are De’Longhi’s recommendations, not a universal schedule; use your kettle manufacturer’s guidance and adjust to the buildup you observe.
De’Longhi also describes a vinegar alternative using one part white vinegar to two parts water: switch the kettle off just before boiling, let the solution stand for a period depending on scale severity, empty it, then boil and discard fresh water twice. The page does not give one fixed soak time for all buildup levels. Follow the instructions for your own kettle before using this method. De’Longhi’s kettle descaling FAQ

If scale remains after descaling
- Check that you used the correct method and allowed the stated soak time; repeat only if the kettle’s instructions say this is appropriate. Tefal’s cited guidance says to repeat if needed.
- Do not scrape the interior with steel wool or an abrasive brush. Use a sponge or soft brush only if the manual permits it.
- If the deposit persists or you are unsure whether it is scale, consult the manufacturer rather than increasing the solution strength or leaving it to soak longer than directed.
