Descale your coffee machine using the product, cycle and rinse steps specified for its exact model. There is no safe universal schedule or descaler: machine design, use, water and manufacturer settings all matter. If you do not have the manual, look up the model number on the manufacturer’s support site before starting.
How often should you descale your coffee machine?
Follow the machine’s own maintenance alert and manual rather than applying a schedule from another brand. Usage, water hardness or treatment, and the machine’s programming can all affect when descaling is due.
These manufacturer examples illustrate how much recommendations differ; each applies only to the named product or range:

These figures are not interchangeable. In particular, do not apply the DE1 water threshold or Nespresso’s capsule count to a different machine.

What descaler should you use?
Use only a product the manufacturer approves for your exact model, in the form and dose the manual specifies. Depending on the machine, that may mean liquid solution, tablets or another product. A coffee-machine cleaning tablet is not automatically a descaler; use it for descaling only if the machine’s instructions say to do so.
Manufacturer directions can differ sharply. Bosch lists compatible tablets for its countertop espresso machines; Philips specifies its CA6700 descaler for the Café Aromis EP8757/20; and the cited De’Longhi drip models call for descaling solution. Decent’s DE1 instructions say, “Use CITRIC ACID ONLY,” and warn that other products may damage seals or affect warranty coverage. By contrast, Nespresso UK says not to use household remedies such as vinegar, citric acid or baking powder on its Original and Vertuo machines. Check your own model’s instructions before choosing a product.

How to descale a coffee machine safely
The exact sequence varies, so treat these as general checkpoints—not a substitute for the model’s manual.
- Find the model-specific instructions. Check the model number and open the matching manual or manufacturer support page. Confirm the approved descaler, amount, cycle and rinse requirements before adding anything.
- Prepare the machine as directed. Empty or remove trays, grounds or capsule containers, filters and other parts only when the instructions require it. For its Café Aromis EP8757/20 procedure, Philips says to empty the drip tray and grounds container and remove the LatteGo Pro and AquaClean filter.
- Add the descaler and water in the specified amounts. Do not borrow a ratio from another machine or brand.
- Run the designated descale program. Start the on-screen or button-operated cycle and follow its prompts. If the manufacturer says not to interrupt the automated procedure, let it finish. Philips says its cited Café Aromis descaling process may take up to 30 minutes; that timing is not a general estimate for other machines.
- Complete every fresh-water rinse. Empty the collection vessel when needed and follow the full rinse sequence in the manual. For the two De’Longhi drip models covered by its instructions, the manufacturer says to repeat the fresh-water rinsing steps three times before brewing. Do not assume that rinse count applies to other machines.
- Resume brewing only when the program and required rinses are complete.
Can you use vinegar to descale a coffee machine?
Not as a universal substitute. Some manufacturers prohibit household remedies: Nespresso UK specifically advises against vinegar, citric acid and baking powder for its Original and Vertuo machines. Decent, on the other hand, specifies citric acid only for its DE1. That difference is why the manual for your exact machine—not a general recipe—must determine which descaler is safe.

What if the descale alert stays on?
Do not assume another brand’s reset steps or repeat a chemical treatment without checking the instructions. If the alert remains after you have completed the model’s program and rinse sequence, consult the manufacturer’s support for that model. There is no established cross-brand troubleshooting sequence that can safely cover every machine.
