To deploy an open-weight language model behind an API, choose a model whose license and architecture fit your needs, match a serving runtime and hardware to that model, then run an inference server behind appropriate access controls. For a self-managed OpenAI-compatible endpoint, vLLM documents a container-based approach that exposes port 8000 and loads a model from Hugging Face. The right setup depends on the model and workload; there is no universal GPU requirement or serving stack that is best for every deployment.
Choose a model and serving route
Start with the model, not the server. Check the exact repository and revision, license, usage policy, tokenizer and chat template, and whether access to the weights is gated. Then confirm that your chosen runtime supports the model architecture and revision.
Three documented self-managed options are vLLM, Hugging Face Text Generation Inference (TGI), and NVIDIA NIM. They differ in supported models, hardware and runtime requirements, API behavior, and operational features. A temporary Hugging Face GPU Job is another option for an evaluation or demo, but it is not a persistent service.
| Option | What it offers | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|
| vLLM container | A self-managed server with an OpenAI-compatible API. Its documented Docker example maps port 8000 and loads a specified Hugging Face model. | Configure NVIDIA GPU access, provide any required credentials for gated or private weights, and account for shared memory, especially with tensor-parallel inference. Check the current container instructions and model support before deployment. |
| Hugging Face TGI | Documented features include continuous batching, streaming, quantization options, OpenAI-compatible /v1/chat or /v1/completions APIs, Prometheus metrics, and OpenTelemetry tracing. |
Confirm support for the selected model. TGI v3 zero-configuration mode chooses token and batch limits based on available hardware; validate those limits against your request sizes and concurrency. |
| NVIDIA NIM | Packages selected model and runtime combinations in containers and provides OpenAI-specification APIs for supported downloadable NIMs. First deployment checks local hardware and selects an available model version. | A NGC API key is required to pull and use NIM. NIM does not provide OpenAI-style API-key authentication itself, so add an access-control layer. Check model-specific entitlements and hardware requirements. |
| Hugging Face GPU Job | Runs vLLM as a temporary GPU job and can expose an OpenAI-compatible endpoint for evaluation or prompt iteration. | The job is billed while running, and its endpoint ends when the job ends. Handle tokens as documented and cancel the job when finished; choose a persistent hosting arrangement for a continuing service. |
The vLLM guide’s example uses Qwen/Qwen3-0.6B as a model identifier; that is an example, not a general-purpose recommendation. Follow the current instructions for the model you actually select.

Deploy a self-managed API
The sequence below applies to a containerized server such as vLLM. Exact commands and configuration vary with the runtime, model, accelerator, and release, so use the current official setup instructions rather than treating a sample configuration as universally compatible.
- Verify the model. Record its repository and revision, license and usage policy, access requirements, and chat template. Confirm that the runtime supports the model architecture.
- Check the host. Confirm accelerator, driver, framework, and container compatibility. Estimate memory for weights, runtime overhead, context/KV cache, and concurrent requests.
- Configure the container. Follow the runtime’s current image instructions, make the required GPU devices available, and provide enough shared memory. vLLM specifically calls out PyTorch shared-memory needs, particularly for tensor-parallel inference.
- Make model files available. Supply credentials securely if weights are gated or private. The vLLM guide shows mounting a Hugging Face cache; avoid embedding access tokens in source code or logs.
- Start the server and verify it locally. The documented vLLM container pattern exposes port 8000 and serves an OpenAI-compatible API. Confirm the model loads and test the exact client operations your application needs before routing real traffic.
- Put a protected boundary in front of it. Limit network exposure and add authentication, TLS, and authorization at the gateway or another suitable layer. Do not assume compatibility with OpenAI’s API means the server is authenticated.
- Measure the real workload. Test the intended prompt and output lengths, concurrency, streaming behavior, and latency target. Adjust capacity and serving limits based on observed results.
The container approach is an implementation pattern, not a guarantee that every model will work with every vLLM release or fit on the same hardware. Pin a tested runtime or image version for reproducibility; vLLM notes that optional dependencies may require a custom image and a matching vLLM version.

Size hardware for the workload
There is no general GPU specification for an “open-weight model.” Parameter count alone cannot tell you whether a deployment will fit in memory or meet its service target. Consider the exact model and format, context length, number of concurrent requests, expected tokens per second, latency target, and runtime support. Model weights are only part of the memory picture: runtime overhead and the KV cache for active contexts also matter.
As a model-specific illustration, OpenAI’s model overview describes gpt-oss-safeguard-120b as having 117 billion parameters, approximately 5.1 billion active, and as designed to fit on a single 80 GB GPU such as an NVIDIA H100; it also mentions larger-memory GPUs such as AMD MI300X. The same overview lists gpt-oss-safeguard-20b at 21 billion parameters, approximately 3.6 billion active. These are model details from OpenAI’s undated page accessed in 2026, not independent benchmark results or a sizing rule for other models.

“OpenAI-compatible” describes an interface, not a promise that every API operation behaves identically across servers. TGI documents OpenAI-compatible /v1/chat and /v1/completions routes; vLLM documents an OpenAI-compatible server. Before connecting an application, test the specific features it uses, such as chat or completions, streaming, tool calls, or structured output.

- Test streaming and error handling if the application relies on them.
- Check tool or structured-output behavior explicitly rather than inferring support from endpoint compatibility.
- Confirm the runtime’s model-specific chat template produces the intended roles and formatting.
Secure and operate the service
An inference API that is reachable over a network needs deliberate security and operations controls. This is particularly important when the server does not provide authentication itself: NVIDIA’s NIM deployment FAQ says NIM does not supply OpenAI-style API-key authentication and recommends an access-control layer such as a service mesh or equivalent.
- Access: Keep the endpoint private unless public access is necessary. Enforce authentication and authorization at a gateway or equivalent layer, and protect model-download credentials and client secrets.
- Transport and network: Use TLS for client connections and limit inbound access to the required networks and services.
- Observability: Track health, errors, latency, resource use, and request capacity. TGI documents Prometheus metrics and OpenTelemetry tracing; NIM documents metrics endpoints.
- Reliability: Add health checks, capacity alerts, and a response plan for failed loads, exhausted memory, and traffic spikes.
- Change control: Pin tested runtime and model revisions, and use a defined process to evaluate and roll out updates.
- Privacy: Set and communicate your own logging, retention, and access policies. Self-hosting does not by itself establish that the surrounding application or infrastructure handles data appropriately.
Understand license, privacy, and total cost
Open-weight does not mean that every model has the same license or usage terms. Read the selected model’s license and policy before using or redistributing it. For the gpt-oss models, OpenAI says Apache 2.0 permits broad use, modification, redistribution, and commercial use subject to its usage policy. OpenAI also says those weights are free to download, while compute, storage, or third-party hosting may cost money. Those statements apply to gpt-oss, not to all open-weight models.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →OpenAI says its described self-hosted gpt-oss arrangement runs on infrastructure controlled by the operator, and that OpenAI does not receive or process data sent to a self-hosted model unless the operator explicitly shares it or uses a managed hosting partner. That statement does not replace a review of your own hosting provider, application, security controls, and retention practices.
Compare candidate stacks on supported models and licenses, accelerator and memory compatibility, required API features, measured latency and throughput for your workload, access controls, observability, and total operating cost. Include administration, storage, compute, and hosting. The documented capabilities do not establish a universal winner on performance or cost.
