Removing a profile from Microsoft Edge deletes that profile from the current device. It does not delete the associated Microsoft account, work or school account, or Windows user account.
Before removing it, check whether the profile contains unsynchronized favorites, passwords, extensions, history, open tabs, autofill information, or other data you still need. The supported desktop method is available from Edge’s profile settings.
Remove an Edge profile on Windows or Mac
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select the Profile icon near the upper-right corner.
- Select Profile settings.
- Under More profiles, locate the profile you want to remove.
- Select the Delete button next to that profile.
- Select Remove profile.
- Confirm the removal when Edge asks.
You can also open the same area through Settings and more (…) > Settings > Profiles.
Depending on your Edge version, older labels may say Manage profile settings instead of Profile settings, or Remove instead of Remove profile. The function is the same.

What removing the profile deletes
Edge profiles keep browsing information separate. Removing one can delete its local:
- Favorites
- Browsing history
- Saved passwords
- Extensions
- Cookies and site sessions
- Settings and themes
- Autofill entries
- Payment information
- Open tabs and other profile data
The removal applies to the profile on that computer. It is not the same as deleting the Microsoft account used to sign in.
Check sync before deleting the profile
If the profile is signed in and synchronization is enabled, some of its data may also be available on other Edge installations. Microsoft warns that deleting synced data while signed in can remove that data from other devices using the same account. See Microsoft’s instructions for Edge sync.
To inspect sync, open … > Settings > Profiles > Sync.

Remove a work or school profile that keeps coming back
Removing an Edge profile does not necessarily remove the underlying work or school identity from Windows. If the account still appears in Edge, remove or disconnect it from Windows as well, where appropriate:
- Open Windows Settings.
- Go to Accounts > Access work or school.
- Review the connected organization accounts and select Disconnect or the equivalent available option.
- Also check Accounts > Email & accounts for the same identity.
The available controls vary depending on how the account was added and whether the device is managed. On a company-owned computer, Microsoft Entra, Intune, Group Policy, or another management system may recreate the profile or prevent its removal.
To see whether Edge is receiving mandatory settings, enter edge://policy in the address bar and select Reload policies if needed. Organization policies can override normal Edge preferences. See Microsoft’s documentation on Edge policies.
If the Remove profile button is missing
Try these checks in order:
- Make sure you selected the correct profile. Edge may not allow removal of the currently active profile. Switch to another profile, reopen Profile settings, and try again.
- Wait for the profile list to load. Close and reopen Edge, then return to Settings > Profiles.
- Check for organization policies. Open edge://policy. A managed device may restrict profile changes.
- Remove the related Windows account. Check Settings > Accounts > Access work or school and Email & accounts.
- Confirm the profile’s actual location. Open edge://version and find Profile path. Do not assume the profile is stored in the Default folder.
A damaged or locked profile can also prevent normal removal. If the profile returns immediately after deletion, policy or a connected organization account is more likely than a simple folder problem.
Manually delete a profile folder on Windows
Use manual deletion only as a recovery or cleanup method. The normal approach is the Profile settings procedure above. Manual deletion can permanently remove local data, so confirm the folder and back up anything needed first.

1. Find the correct profile folder
In Edge, open edge://version and read the value beside Profile path. Common locations include:
- C:\Users\<Current-user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default
- C:\Users\<Current-user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Profile 1
- C:\Users\<Current-user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Profile 2
The actual location can differ if Edge was configured with a custom UserDataDir policy or launched with the –user-data-dir option. See Microsoft’s UserDataDir policy documentation.

2. Close Edge completely
Close every Edge window. If files remain locked, open Command Prompt and run taskkill /f /im msedge.exe.
3. Delete only the target profile folder
Open the profile’s parent folder, usually %localappdata%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data.
Delete only the folder identified by edge://version, such as Profile 2. Do not delete the entire User Data folder unless you intend to remove all local Edge profiles and their data.

Deleting registry entries under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Edge\Profiles does not remove the actual profile files and is not a substitute for deleting the profile folder.
Remove an Edge account on Android or iPhone
Edge mobile does not use the desktop More profiles and Remove profile workflow. On Android or iPhone, Microsoft’s documented option is to sign out and turn off sync:
- Open the Edge mobile app.
- Select More options (…).
- Select Settings.
- Select your profile image.
- Select Sign out and turn off sync.
To manage synchronization without signing out, open … > Settings > select your profile image > Sync.
As on desktop, be careful when removing or clearing synchronized data: changes can affect other devices signed in with the same account.
Actions that do not remove an Edge profile

| Delete the entire User Data folder | Removes local data for every Edge profile, not just one. |
FAQ
Does removing an Edge profile delete my Microsoft account?
No. It removes the browser profile from the current device. The Microsoft account, work or school account, and Windows user account remain separate.

Can I remove the active Edge profile?
Edge may require you to switch to another profile before removing the one you want to delete. Select another profile, then open Settings > Profiles and try again.
Why does a deleted work account keep appearing in Edge?
The identity may still be stored in Windows under Settings > Accounts > Access work or school or Email & accounts. A company management policy may also be recreating or controlling the Edge profile.
Where is an Edge profile stored on Windows?
Open edge://version and read Profile path. Common folders are Default, Profile 1, and Profile 2 under %localappdata%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data, but a policy or command-line option can change the location.
Will deleting an Edge profile remove data from my other devices?
Local profile removal is performed on the current device, but synchronized data requires care. Clearing or deleting synced data while signed in can affect other Edge devices using that account.

For desktop Edge, use Profile > Profile settings > More profiles > the profile’s delete button > Remove profile. Check sync first, and remove a related work or school account from Windows if the profile continues to return. Use manual folder deletion only after confirming the path in edge://version and closing every Edge process.
