You can remove Windows.old using Windows’ built-in storage cleanup tools. First decide whether you might need to return to your previous Windows version: deleting the previous installation removes that rollback option, and Microsoft says the deletion cannot be undone. Rollback is usually available for ten days after an upgrade, though the period can vary.

Before you delete Windows.old

Windows.old contains files from the previous Windows installation. Removing the previous installation frees its space, but also removes the files Windows needs to go back. Microsoft Support warns: “If you delete your previous version of Windows, this can’t be undone (you won’t be able to go back to your previous version of Windows).” See Microsoft’s guidance on deleting a previous version of Windows.

Microsoft says rollback is available for a limited time and is usually available for ten days after an upgrade. If you may roll back, do not delete Windows.old or $windows.~bt. Returning to the previous version removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes; apps or drivers added since upgrading might not be available or work properly afterward. Details are in Microsoft’s rollback guidance.

  3. Under Free up space now, check Delete previous version of Windows.

  2. Select the drive containing the Windows installation, then select OK.
  3. Select Clean up system files. If prompted, provide administrator approval.
  4. Select the relevant previous-Windows-installation category, then confirm with Delete files.

Use the built-in system-file cleanup rather than trying to force-delete the protected folder yourself. Microsoft documents Disk Cleanup in its Disk Cleanup guidance.

Which cleanup route should you use?

Route Where to find it Best fit
Windows 11 Cleanup recommendations Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations Windows 11 users who see the Previous Windows installation(s) category.
Windows 10 Storage Sense Settings > System > Storage > Change how we free up space automatically Windows 10 users with the previous-version cleanup option available.
Disk Cleanup Search for Disk Cleanup, then choose Clean up system files Use when Storage Sense is unavailable.

All three routes remove the previous installation files; none retains the rollback option once those files are deleted.
