On iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro
- Open Photos and go to Library.
- Tap Select, then choose the photos or videos to remove.
- Tap Delete and confirm Delete Photo or Delete Video.
With iCloud Photos enabled, those items are also deleted from other devices signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud Photos turned on. Apple’s iCloud storage guide describes this as a synced, library-wide change.
On Mac
- Open Photos and select the items.
- Press the Delete key and confirm.
If iCloud Photos is enabled, the deletion syncs to your other devices using the same Apple Account.

In a browser, including on Windows

For bulk selection, use Select and optionally Select All on iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro; Command-A or Command-select on macOS; or Control-A or Control-select on Windows. Apple’s documented browser workflow is the straightforward option for Windows. Apple’s iCloud.com guide explains deletion and recovery there.
Recover photos or delete them permanently
Deleted photos and videos normally go to Recently Deleted, where they can be recovered for 30 days. You can also permanently delete items sooner from that area. This is a recovery window, not a backup: Apple warns that when iCloud storage is over its limit, deleted items may be removed immediately and may not be recoverable.

Stop syncing without deleting your iCloud library
Turning off iCloud Photos on one device is different from deleting photos from the account. Before changing the setting, decide whether you want full-resolution originals on that device: download them first and make sure there is enough local storage. If you keep optimized versions without downloading originals, you may not have full-resolution copies available locally.

iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap iCloud, then Photos.
- Turn off Sync this [Device] and choose whether to download photos or remove them from the device.
Mac
- Open System Settings and click your name.
- Click iCloud, then Photos.
- Turn off Sync this Mac and choose Download or Remove from Mac as appropriate.
These device-level choices affect syncing and local copies; they are not the same as scheduling deletion of the iCloud Photos library. Menu wording can vary by operating-system version. Apple’s instructions for turning off iCloud Photos cover the device and account-level options.
Turn off iCloud Photos for the account
If you want to stop using iCloud Photos for the account, use the Turn Off and Delete Photos option in iCloud storage settings. Apple says the iCloud photos are deleted 30 days after the service is stopped, and provides an Undo Delete or Recover option during that period. Download originals and check Apple’s Shared Library guidance before proceeding; account-level shutdown has a wider effect than turning sync off on one device. The exact menu labels may depend on your OS version. Apple’s account-level instructions explain the flow.

Check which shared library contains the item
Shared Albums and Shared Library items have different deletion and recovery rules from ordinary items in your Personal Library.
- Shared Albums: A creator can delete any photos, videos, or comments in the album; a subscriber can delete items they added. Deletion is immediate, and participants lose access to items they did not save to their own library if the album is deleted. Apple’s current storage guidance notes that on versions 27 or later, Shared Album photos count toward the creator’s iCloud storage. Check your installed software’s guidance for version-specific storage behavior.
- Shared Library: Participants can delete items, but only the person who added an item can permanently delete it before the 30-day period has passed. To remove items counting against your iCloud storage from a Shared Library, Apple’s storage guidance says to view your Personal Library.
Confirm whether an item is in your Personal Library, Shared Library, or a Shared Album before deleting it. Apple’s iCloud.com guide details the Shared Album and Shared Library permissions.

Choose the right action for your goal
| Goal | Action | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Remove selected photos from the synced library | Delete in Photos or at iCloud.com/photos | Deletion syncs to devices using iCloud Photos with the same Apple Account; items normally remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days. |
| Stop syncing on just one device | Turn off Sync this [Device] or Sync this Mac | Choose whether to download originals or remove local items; this is not an account-wide library deletion. |
| Stop using iCloud Photos for the account | Use Turn Off and Delete Photos in iCloud storage settings | Apple schedules the iCloud photos for deletion after 30 days and offers a recovery option during that period. |
| Keep a copy before deleting | Download originals or copy/archive the items elsewhere | You retain a separate copy instead of relying on Recently Deleted for recovery. |
Keep a copy before you delete
If you might want the pictures later, make a copy or archive them before deleting or changing sync settings. Apple advises downloading originals before turning off iCloud Photos and checking that the destination has enough storage. A computer or external drive can serve as an archive destination; verify the files are present there before removing the iCloud versions.
