If you only want songs gone from an app’s library, use that app’s library controls instead: removing a listing does not necessarily delete the audio file from your computer.
Choose what you want to remove
“Delete all tracks” can mean deleting music stored on your PC or removing songs from a music app’s library. These actions are different:
| Action | What happens to the PC’s audio files | What happens in the app |
|---|---|---|
| Delete files in File Explorer | The selected files go to the Recycle Bin; empty it to remove them and reclaim their space. | The app may stop showing files stored in those folders. |
| Remove entries from an app library | Depends on the app’s option; a file may remain on the PC. | The selected entries are removed from that library, but availability elsewhere may differ. |
Windows media libraries are collections of folders, and music can also be stored outside them. Removing a folder from a library view is not the same as deleting its files, as explained in Microsoft Learn’s overview of Windows libraries.
Delete music files from Windows 11 or Windows 10
- Open File Explorer. Check likely locations such as This PC > Music and This PC > Downloads. Music may also be in another folder or drive. Microsoft identifies Music and Downloads as common places for personal files, including music, in its Windows drive-space guide.
- Confirm the target before selecting files. If your goal is to identify larger files, switch to Details view and sort by Size. Select only the tracks you intend to remove; check the folder and file names carefully before deleting a large group.
- Delete the selected files. If you want to keep the music but free space on the PC, move or copy the files to external storage first. An external drive is optional, not required for deletion.
- Empty the Recycle Bin to finish. Until then, deleted files may remain recoverable there and their space may not be reclaimed. Microsoft says: “If you delete any files, remember to empty the Recycle Bin to completely remove them from your device and free up space.”

Apple notes that when a music library is accessed on multiple devices, deleted songs may remain available on those devices. The instructions are in Apple’s guide to deleting songs from a library. The documented Windows steps describe an item menu; the exact bulk-selection behavior can depend on the version and selection context, so verify the selected items before confirming.
Spotify Desktop
Spotify’s Local Files feature displays audio files from folders you enable in Settings > Library > Show Local Files. Those entries point to files stored on your device; they are not necessarily tracks hosted by Spotify. To delete the underlying audio, use File Explorer and remove it from its source folder. Spotify also recommends removing local files from playlists when troubleshooting their display. See Spotify’s Local Files instructions.

Removing saved items from a Spotify account library is a separate operation from deleting PC files. Spotify’s developer API documents saved-library removal for track and album URIs, with a maximum of 40 URIs in one request; that limit applies to API requests, not to deleting files through File Explorer. See Spotify’s saved-track removal API reference.
