To clean up thoroughly, review the conversation, saved memories, history-based personalization and—where relevant—files or connected apps. The steps below cover ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot, based on each provider’s guidance checked October 4, 2026; menus and feature availability can vary by account, region and platform.
First, know what you are deleting
Chat history, explicit saved memories and personalization inferred from earlier conversations can be stored or managed separately. OpenAI warns that “Deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from that chat.” Microsoft likewise distinguishes saved memories from inferences based on chat history.
- Delete removes a conversation or memory according to that service’s deletion process.
- Archive or hide generally changes visibility rather than erasing the conversation. In ChatGPT, archived chats remain saved, searchable and subject to the same retention rules as other saved chats.
- Turn off personalization stops or limits a feature, but may leave information already saved. For example, turning off ChatGPT Memory does not delete past chats, and turning off Microsoft Saved memories does not automatically delete those memories.
Other sources may matter too: ChatGPT users may need to review Library files and connected apps, while Gemini users may need to delete relevant chats and disconnect a connected app. Removing information from one place does not necessarily remove copies or data available elsewhere.
Delete chats and memories in ChatGPT
Delete or archive a conversation
- Open the conversation’s menu and choose the delete option, then confirm. OpenAI says a deleted chat disappears from your account view immediately and cannot be restored through Support.
- If you only want to remove conversations from the regular sidebar, choose Archive instead. Archived chats remain in your account.
- To delete all conversations at once, open Settings > Data controls > Delete all chats. This action cannot be undone.
OpenAI says deleted chats are scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days. That is a retention window, not a promise of immediate erasure: stated exceptions include cases where data has been de-identified or must be retained for security or legal reasons. See OpenAI’s chat-retention guidance.

Review saved memories and other sources
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Depending on your account, the labels may include Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage or Saved memories.
- Review and delete relevant saved memories using the controls shown. Turning Memory off does not erase past chats.
- Delete the originating conversation as well if you want to remove that source. Then check whether the same information is present in Library files or connected apps.
OpenAI says memory controls may vary by plan, region, platform and workspace, and work accounts may be subject to administrator retention policies. It also says deletion logs for memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. Details are in OpenAI’s Memory FAQ.
Use Temporary Chat for a future conversation
Temporary Chat conversations do not appear in history, do not create or update memories and are not used to improve models while temporary, according to OpenAI. They may still be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Temporary Chat is a way to handle a future conversation; it does not delete earlier chats or memories. See OpenAI’s Temporary Chat FAQ.

Delete chats and manage personalization in Gemini
- To remove a conversation, delete it from Recent chats or from Gemini Apps Activity.
- To stop Gemini from personalizing responses based on past chats, open Gemini settings and switch off past-chat personalization under Personal Intelligence.
- If the information came from a connected app, delete chats that contain it and disconnect the app. Google says either step alone may not be enough: old chat content may remain after disconnection, or Gemini may still retrieve the detail from the connected app after chat deletion.
Google warns that a deleted chat may take a short time to stop being used for personalization, and changes to connected-app data can take days to affect the Gemini experience. When memory is enabled, you can ask Gemini whether it used information from past chats and correct remembered information directly. See Google’s Gemini personalization guidance.
Delete conversations and control past-chat search in Claude
- Open the conversation, select its title and choose Delete.
- To remove several conversations, select them in chat history and choose Delete Selected.
- If the past-chat search feature is available on your account, open Settings > Profile > Preferences and switch off Search and reference chats to stop that feature from searching past conversations.
Anthropic says past-chat search is rolling out to Max, Team and Enterprise plans and will expand to other plans. Its guidance says deleting a conversation is the way to ensure it will not be included when Claude searches past conversations. Check the current controls and rollout for your account. These instructions concern Claude’s consumer experience; Anthropic’s deletion guidance distinguishes it from Claude for Work and API data handling. See Anthropic’s conversation deletion guidance and its past-chat personalization guidance.

Delete chats and memories in Microsoft Copilot
Remove conversation history
- In Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, delete an individual conversation from the Chats list.
- To delete all Copilot activity history, use the Microsoft account privacy dashboard.
Other Copilot experiences may have different steps. For work or school accounts, administrators and retention policies may affect what you can delete or how the controls behave.
Delete saved memories
- Open Chat settings > Personalization > Saved memories > Manage saved memories.
- Delete a memory individually or choose Delete all memories.
Turning Saved memories off does not itself delete memories that were already saved. See Microsoft’s guidance on Copilot memory.
Rank #4
Turn off personalization based on chat history
Chat-history personalization is separate from saved memories. Microsoft says turning off Chat history, or Chat history & work insights for some work or school accounts, removes history-derived inferences after 30 days. If you turn the setting back on within that 30-day period, those memories may be restored. See Microsoft’s Copilot chat-history guidance.
Quick Recap
Best Value
A practical cleanup checklist
- Delete the conversation if you want it removed, rather than archiving or hiding it.
- Review and delete separate saved memories that contain the same information.
- Check history-based personalization controls and understand what turning them off does—and does not—delete.
- Look for other sources, such as connected apps or files, where the information may still be available.
- Allow for the provider’s stated deletion or update timing; a change may not affect every system or response immediately.
- If you use a work or school account, check whether administrator settings or retention policies apply.
