Students generally cannot delete an assignment submission themselves in Canvas. If you need to replace work, look for New Attempt in Canvas on the web or Resubmit Assignment in the Canvas Student iOS app. If that option is unavailable—or you uploaded private information—contact your instructor; for sensitive material, contact your institution’s Canvas or IT support team as well.
Can you delete a submitted assignment in Canvas?
Canvas’s student guidance describes submitting another attempt, not deleting a submitted assignment. Instructure’s Canvas Student Guide says that, if the instructor allows it, a student can submit another version using the New Attempt button. An Instructure guide also says students cannot delete a file submission from the assignment after uploading it; its suggested correction is to submit a new file. See Instructure’s assignment submission guidance.
Submitting a replacement does not mean the earlier attempt disappears from the instructor’s view. Instructure says students may see only their most recent submission in the sidebar, while instructors can see all submissions.
How to submit a corrected version
- Open the course. In Canvas, select the course containing the assignment.
- Open the assignment. Go to Assignments, then select the assignment and check its submission details.
- Start another attempt if the option appears. In Canvas on the web, select New Attempt. In the Canvas Student iOS app, open the course, select Assignments and the assignment, then tap Resubmit Assignment, as described in the Canvas Student iOS guide.
- Upload and submit the corrected work. Confirm Canvas shows the new submission details. Do not assume that another attempt changes the due date or grading treatment.
What to do if you cannot resubmit
If New Attempt or Resubmit Assignment is missing, or the assignment is closed, message your instructor. Ask whether they can enable another attempt or reassign the assignment to you. Instructure Community guidance notes that an instructor may need to reassign a closed assignment to an individual student; deleting the assignment is generally not necessary to allow another submission. Availability depends on the course and assignment settings.

What to do if you uploaded confidential information
Contact your instructor and your institution’s Canvas or IT support team promptly. Explain what was uploaded and ask what removal options are available and whether the submission record will remain. An Instructure Community Coach has said that a school administrator may be able to remove the file while the submission record remains, but this is community guidance, not a guarantee: administrator capabilities and institutional procedures vary.
