If you’re wondering how to defrost a Samsung refrigerator ice maker, Samsung’s U.S. guidance is clear: do not defrost it manually. The ice maker has an automatic defrost function. If it is frozen over or that function is not working, contact Samsung service rather than trying to melt the ice yourself.
What to do if the Samsung ice maker is frozen
Samsung warns: “Do not attempt to defrost your ice maker, as this may damage the ice maker.” Its guidance is to request service if the ice maker is covered with a sheet of ice or its automatic defrost function is not working. See Samsung’s ice-maker troubleshooting guidance.
- Ice maker is visibly frozen over: Stop using DIY defrost methods and contact Samsung support to arrange service.
- Ice maker is not producing ice, but is not frozen over: Follow the model-specific troubleshooting steps in Samsung’s support guidance or manual. Do not assume that manually thawing it is the fix.
If the ice bucket is stuck
Do not pull or pry a stuck bucket free. Samsung notes that removal motions vary by model, so consult the refrigerator’s user manual and follow its instructions gently. If the bucket remains frozen in place, do not force it or apply heat; contact local Samsung support for model-specific advice.
Samsung Gulf’s guidance for a stuck bucket similarly cautions against force, sharp tools, and heat, and suggests allowing a frozen bucket to thaw naturally. Ice around a refrigerator fan is a different problem
Samsung publishes a manual defrost procedure for ice buildup around a refrigerator fan when it causes noise. That procedure addresses fan-area ice—not the ice maker—and is not a workaround for a frozen ice maker. Samsung says a manual defrost may clear the fan-area ice temporarily, but service is needed to correct the underlying cause. Its fan-noise guidance explicitly warns that a hair dryer or other heat source can damage the refrigerator.
Do not transfer the fan-area procedure to the ice maker. If you are dealing with fan noise and suspect ice near the fan, use Samsung’s instructions for that issue rather than attempting to thaw the ice maker.

When to contact Samsung support
- The ice maker is covered by a sheet of ice.
- You suspect its automatic defrost function is not working.
- The ice bucket will not release using the gentle, model-specific removal motion in the manual.
- You are unsure whether the ice is around the ice maker or elsewhere in the refrigerator.
Have the refrigerator’s model information available when you contact support. The correct bucket-removal motion and service guidance can depend on the model.
