Check your model’s manual before following a procedure. Never use a hair dryer: Samsung warns that it can damage the refrigerator.
Identify your refrigerator before defrosting
Samsung’s button-based procedure applies to direct-cool refrigerators covered by its India support guidance, not to every Samsung refrigerator. If you have a different type or are in another market, use the instructions in your model’s manual. Samsung’s US frost guidance covers light frost and heavier buildup, while its advice for fan noise describes a separate manual-defrost process.
How to defrost a Samsung direct-cool refrigerator
For direct-cool refrigerators covered by Samsung India’s guidance, follow these steps:
- Check the freezer compartment for excess ice.
- Push the defrost button inside the freezer compartment. It stays pressed during defrosting.
- Wait for the process to finish. Samsung India estimates about two hours; the button returns to its normal state and the refrigerator restarts automatically.
Samsung India recommends defrosting these direct-cool refrigerators twice a week or when excess ice buildup appears. Treat this as guidance for the product category and market described by Samsung, not a schedule for all Samsung models. How to remove frost or heavy ice buildup
Samsung US recommends a damp cloth for light frost, followed by a dry cloth to dry the area. For heavier patches, gently use a plastic scraper. If the buildup is too heavy or hard to remove by hand, defrost the refrigerator or freezer according to its model manual. Do not chip at ice with a sharp or metal tool.
Do not use a hair dryer to speed up defrosting. Samsung’s warning is explicit: “Do not use a hair dryer to speed defrosting. This will damage the refrigerator.” Samsung US: frost in the freezer, refrigerator, or ice bucket

What to do if ice buildup comes with fan noise
Samsung US describes a manual defrost for fan noise associated with ice buildup. This is the procedure on that troubleshooting page; check your model’s manual if its instructions differ.
- Remove perishable food and empty the ice buckets.
- Place towels beneath the refrigerator, unplug it, and prop the doors open.
- Replace wet towels with dry ones until they stop getting wet or at least 24 hours have passed.
- Restart the refrigerator and close the doors. Wait about two hours before returning food, as Samsung’s procedure advises.
This may clear the ice and stop the noise temporarily, but Samsung says service is needed to address the underlying cause if the noise returns. Samsung US: refrigerator noises and ice-related fan noise

Why frost returns and how to prevent it
Frost can form when warm, moist air gets into the refrigerator and freezes. Samsung US identifies open or poorly sealing doors and hot items placed inside as possible contributors. Check these common causes:
- Make sure food or containers are not keeping the door from closing fully.
- Let hot food cool before placing it inside.
- Leave two inches of clearance in front of the rear vents, as Samsung US recommends.
- Clean a dirty door seal with warm, soapy water and dry it. If the seal is torn, split, or otherwise damaged, contact Samsung support.
For direct-cool refrigerators, Samsung India also lists infrequent defrosting and temperature settings among possible contributors to excess ice. When to contact Samsung support
Contact Samsung support or service if the direct-cool defrost button does not return after melting, a damaged seal prevents proper closure, or ice-related fan noise comes back after manual defrosting. If a sheet of ice forms inside the refrigerator, Samsung US says a spill or leak may be responsible: clear it and check whether it returns after two to three hours. If it does, contact support.
