When code behaves unexpectedly, resist the urge to change several things and hope one works. First write down what you expected and what happened instead; then make the problem reproducible and trace execution to the first point where reality diverges from expectation. That turns a vague symptom into a testable explanation.

Start by describing the discrepancy

Before editing code, answer two questions: What did you expect the code to do? and What happened instead? Microsoft’s Debugging code for absolute beginners recommends clarifying the problem before debugging. Its useful warning is that “A debugger, unfortunately, isn’t something that can magically reveal all the problems or ‘bugs’ in our code.” A debugger helps you inspect execution; you still need to know what behavior you are looking for.

  • Expected: the observable result, state change, or behavior you believe should occur.
  • Actual: the result, error, or behavior you can observe.
  • Conditions: the input, actions, environment, and relevant timing associated with the issue, if known.

Keep this description specific. “The page is broken” gives you little to test; “submitting this form with an empty phone field shows a success message” identifies an input and an unexpected result.

Make the problem reproducible

Reduce the case until the fewest inputs or actions that still trigger the behavior remain. A small reproducer gives you a stable target for stepping through code, testing a theory, and checking a fix. Remove unrelated steps carefully, rerunning the case as you go so you know the problem still occurs.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the behavior is intermittent, record the conditions under which it appears: the input, sequence of actions, timing, environment, and what you observed. Change one factor at a time where possible. Some defects depend on conditions that are difficult to reproduce, so a reliable minimal case may not be available; preserve the observations you do have rather than pretending the issue is deterministic.

Trace execution to the first divergence

Work forward from a point where behavior is still correct toward the point where it becomes incorrect. The goal is to find the first value, branch, or state transition that does not match your expectation—not merely the place where the failure becomes visible.

  1. Choose the transition to inspect. Identify the function, condition, or operation most likely to change the relevant value or state.
  2. Pause before or at that point. Set a breakpoint, then run the reproducer.
  3. Step through the relevant code. Inspect the values that determine the outcome, including inputs and intermediate results.
  4. Compare each observation with your expectation. When a value first becomes wrong, inspect the code that produced or changed it.

Microsoft’s beginner guide explains that stepping through code and watching variable changes can reveal when and how an incorrect value is assigned. If the suspected area is large, move the breakpoint earlier or later and narrow the interval until you can inspect the transition closely.

Test one explanation at a time

Turn each plausible cause into a hypothesis with a prediction. For example: “This branch runs when the value is zero; if that is the cause, the breakpoint should show zero immediately before the condition.” Then gather the observation that could support or weaken that explanation.

A breakpoint is useful when you need to pause and inspect state. A conditional breakpoint pauses only when a condition is met, while a logpoint records a message without stopping execution. The VS Code Python Debugger documentation describes these options for Python debugging. Use targeted logging or diagnostic output when a debugger is inconvenient, but keep it focused on the values and transitions that distinguish your hypothesis from alternatives.

Avoid changing unrelated code while testing a theory. If several edits happen between observations, it becomes harder to tell which change mattered and whether the explanation was right.

Choose a debugger that fits your environment

There is no universal best debugger. Match the tool to your language, runtime, editor, operating system, and the way the program runs. Before committing to a workflow, check whether the debugger supports the environment, whether you can launch the program or attach to its process, how it exposes breakpoints and runtime state, and what setup the project requires.

For Python in VS Code

VS Code’s Python Debugger extension documents support for scripts and several application types, with launch configurations, ordinary and conditional breakpoints, and logpoints. The exact setup depends on the project and environment; follow the extension’s documentation for the application you are running.

For Python with the standard-library debugger

Python’s pdb is an interactive source debugger. The Python 3.14.8 documentation describes post-mortem debugging and attaching to an existing process as supported use cases. pdb is specific to Python; for another language, consult that language’s official debugger documentation.

For AI-assisted debugging in Visual Studio

Microsoft documents a product-specific Debugger Agent in Visual Studio that can work through reproduction, instrumentation, runtime validation, and a targeted correction, followed by human validation. Treat it as assistance within that product—not as proof that AI can diagnose every codebase or that the feature is available in every version, plan, or environment. Inspect and verify any suggested change yourself.

Verify the fix against the original case

After making a focused change, rerun the same reproducer and compare the result with the expectation you wrote down. The fix is not established just because the code looks plausible: the original behavior should now match the intended behavior. Where suitable, preserve the reproducer as a regression test so a later change can detect the same failure.
