To cut and shape toilet paper rolls for fall tree crafts, first choose whether you want a flat leaf-stamping activity, a dimensional tree, or a freestanding silhouette. Flattening a tube helps with clean strips and silhouettes; for a leaf stamp, cut the tube lengthwise, trim and bend the shape, then tape it. The methods below use an empty, dry tube and common craft supplies.

Gather materials for your chosen method
Start with an empty, dry toilet paper tube. Depending on the design, you may also need scissors, paper or lightweight cardboard, tape or glue, paint, and a paintbrush. A printable fall-tree sheet is optional for the stamping activity. None of the documented methods requires a specialized cutting tool or a branded supply.
- Leaf stamp: tube, scissors, tape, paint and brush, paper, and optionally a printable tree sheet.
- Dimensional tree: two toilet paper tubes (or one paper-towel tube), paper, scissors, paint, and glue.
- Standing silhouette: tube, scissors, and paint; red, orange, and yellow dots are one suggested decoration, with other colors optional.
- Separate canopy: tube trunk, lightweight cardboard, scissors, and decorating materials of choice.
How to make a toilet paper roll leaf-stamping autumn tree
This is the simplest option when the goal is a printed tree on paper. The tube becomes a small leaf-shaped stamp rather than the tree itself.
- Cut an empty tube down one side lengthwise so it opens flat.
- Continue trimming until the piece forms a small leaf shape.
- Bend the edges to make pointed corners, then tape the shape so it holds its form.
- Dip or brush paint onto the stamp and print leaves around the branches of a tree drawing or printable. Use the opposite end of the tube as a separate stamp section if useful.
- Optionally paint details on the printed leaves or add fallen leaves below the tree.

How to cut and shape a dimensional tree with separate leaves
Use two tubes when you want the trunk and leaves to be separate pieces. A paper-towel tube can also supply the material described for this project.
- Cut one toilet paper tube in half to make the trunk section.
- Flatten the second tube. Flattening gives you a flatter surface for cutting narrow leaf strips.
- Cut the flattened tube into thin strips for the leaves.
- Arrange the trunk and leaf pieces on paper and glue them in place.
- Paint the assembled pieces. Cover the sides and interiors as well if you want a fully colored finish.
In its project, Jewish Kids Create reports that children’s scissors were not strong enough for the tube, so an adult carefully used larger scissors. That is one maker’s observation, not a universal specification for scissors. See the project instructions.

How to cut a freestanding fall tree silhouette
A standing silhouette uses the tube itself as the tree shape. Its key feature is a connected point: do not cut the tree completely away from the tube.
- Flatten the tube and draw a simple tree silhouette that includes a base.
- Cut around the outline, leaving the tree attached to the tube at one point.
- Reopen the cut shape and gently reshape the base so it can stand.
- Decorate with paint. One tutorial uses dots of red, orange, and yellow, while other colors are optional.

How to attach a separate canopy to a tube trunk
For a tree with a distinct canopy, keep the trunk tube mostly intact and make two slots for the canopy.
- Cut a canopy shape from lightweight cardboard and decorate it.
- At the top end of the tube, cut two short slits directly opposite one another.
- Slide the canopy into the opposing slits to hold it in place.

When an adult should help with cutting
Plan on adult supervision around scissors, and have an adult take over if the tube is difficult for a child to cut. One tutorial says younger children may need cutting help; another maker reports that children’s scissors could not cut the tube for that particular project. These are practical tutorial observations, not formal child-safety standards.
