To customize your LinkedIn profile URL, edit its final segment in Public profile & URL settings, then save. Choose a readable name or professional-brand variation that is available. The custom URL makes your profile easier to identify and share, but it does not guarantee higher Google rankings, more profile views, or recruiter responses. Public-profile visibility is a separate setting that controls what people outside LinkedIn can see.

How to change your LinkedIn URL on desktop

  1. From the LinkedIn home page, select Me > View Profile.
  2. On the right side of your profile, select the edit control beside Public profile & URL.
  3. Under Edit your custom URL, select the edit control beside your current public URL.
  4. Enter the new ending and save.

LinkedIn’s [custom URL guidance] describes this desktop route. The exact interface can change, so if a label has moved, look for the Public profile & URL settings from your profile.

How to change or find the URL in the mobile app

In the LinkedIn app, open your profile from your profile photo, then use the profile page’s Contact info or Profile URL route to reach Public profile settings. LinkedIn documents more than one path across its mobile help instructions, so labels and navigation may vary by app surface. Its [URL editing instructions] and [public URL help page] cover those routes.

To find and share the URL, open the same public-profile settings and copy the public profile address shown there. Use that URL on a résumé, portfolio, or email signature only after checking that it opens the profile you intend to share.

Choose a URL that is recognizable and easy to share

LinkedIn recommends a variation of your name and/or professional brand because you will share the public URL so people can find your profile. The custom segment is first come, first served; if your preferred version is taken, try another readable variation.

  • Keep it recognizable: use a name or professional-brand variation people can associate with you.
  • Make it easy to spell aloud: a short, clear segment is less likely to be mistyped when shared verbally.
  • Follow the format rules: the segment must be 3–100 characters and cannot contain spaces, symbols, special characters, or the word “LinkedIn.”
  • Do not rely on capitalization: uppercase and lowercase versions are treated alike.
  • Check availability: another member may already have claimed the segment.

These limits and recommendations are from LinkedIn’s [custom public profile URL guidance].

Think before changing an existing URL

LinkedIn allows a custom URL to be changed up to five times within six months. After the fifth change, you cannot change it again for another six months. Repeated changes can make it harder for people to find you, especially if you have already shared the old address in applications or other materials.

LinkedIn says a previous URL remains linked to your profile for six months unless you unlink it. If you unlink it, other members cannot claim it for seven days. LinkedIn also says you should be able to revert to the old URL immediately after a change; if that does not work, contact LinkedIn support. Assigned URLs cannot be changed through the custom URL editor. A country change can alter the URL format, but LinkedIn says old URLs will still work. Additional language profiles use the same public profile URL with a language field appended. If you close your account, LinkedIn says its custom URL becomes available after 180 days. These rules are described in LinkedIn’s [URL guidance] and [public URL help page].

Set public visibility separately from the URL

Customizing the URL does not itself make more of your profile visible. In your public-profile settings, you can control whether your profile is visible to people who are not signed in and which eligible sections are displayed. A profile can be set to public while limits still hide some sections.

Choose the visibility level that fits your needs: showing more eligible profile details can make the public page more informative, while restricting visibility exposes less information outside LinkedIn. LinkedIn warns that turning off public visibility limits may make collection by unauthorized third parties easier. Review the available controls in LinkedIn’s [public profile visibility guidance] and [off-LinkedIn visibility help].

What to expect from Google and other search tools

Changing your URL or public-profile details does not guarantee an immediate change in search results. LinkedIn says Google, Yahoo, or Bing may take several weeks or even months to detect and reflect public-profile changes, and LinkedIn does not control when those search tools refresh. If a result remains incorrect, LinkedIn directs members to contact the search tool for correction. No particular ranking or timing is guaranteed. See LinkedIn’s [public visibility guidance].
