Connect and turn on your controller, open the Xbox Accessories app on a supported Xbox console or Windows PC, then select the controller to see the options available for that model. Button mapping and profiles are supported on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11, but the controls shown are not identical for every controller. The documented keyboard-key mapping steps below apply to the Elite Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller—not universally to standard Xbox controllers.
Before you start: check your controller and platform
Microsoft lists Xbox Accessories button mapping and profile configuration for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11. Connect and power on your controller, open the app, and select the controller to inspect its available configuration options. The specific connection requirements depend on the controller; consult its current Xbox support instructions if you need connection help.
Do not assume that every menu or advanced feature described for one controller will appear on another. Standard Xbox wireless controllers, the Elite Series 2, and the Xbox Adaptive Controller do not have a single documented, universal set of app options.
Remap a button to a keyboard key on Elite Series 2 or Adaptive Controller
Xbox Wire’s documented keyboard-key mapping workflow covers the Elite Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller. It lets you assign a keyboard key to a controller button’s primary or shift-mode use.

The available choices depend on the selected controller and configuration. See Xbox Wire’s keyboard button-mapping walkthrough for the documented procedure.
Configure profiles on an Elite Series 2
The Elite Series 2 stores up to three custom profiles and one default profile on the controller. Use the controller’s Profile button to switch among them. Create or edit a profile in Xbox Accessories, then select the saved profile you want to use. Microsoft’s Elite Series 2 product page documents the profile count and on-controller switching.

That storage and switching detail is specific to the Elite Series 2 documentation; do not assume another controller stores or switches profiles in the same way.
Understand the difference between app trigger settings and trigger locks
The Elite Series 2 has physical hair trigger locks that shorten trigger travel. These are hardware switches on the controller, not an app setting or a trigger dead-zone adjustment. Set the locks on the controller itself if you want the shorter physical travel; do not look for a software threshold that the cited Xbox documentation does not establish.

For other trigger behavior, inspect the options shown for your own controller in Xbox Accessories. The available official material does not establish a universal trigger dead-zone value or a complete per-model trigger-setting sequence, so the exact controls should not be assumed in advance. Xbox describes the Elite Series 2’s physical features on its controller product page.

Microsoft announced button remapping for standard Xbox wireless controllers in a 2015 console update. That historical announcement describes a console rollout; it does not by itself establish that every current app feature or control is available on Windows for every standard controller. Check the options displayed for your model and platform rather than applying the Elite Series 2 or Adaptive Controller keyboard workflow to a standard controller.
