To customize the iPhone Always-On display, open Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display and choose whether to show wallpaper and notifications. To change the clock or widgets, edit the Lock Screen itself: Always-On shows a dimmed version of that screen while the iPhone is locked.
Choose whether Always-On shows wallpaper and notifications
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & Brightness, then Always On Display.
- Turn Show Wallpaper and Show Notifications on or off independently.
For example, turn off Show Wallpaper but leave Show Notifications on for a simpler dimmed screen that can still display alerts. Turn off both to hide those elements. You can also switch Always-On off entirely from the same settings area. Apple says the feature is on by default on supported models. Labels or placement may vary slightly by iOS version or language. Apple’s iOS 27 guide to keeping the display on longer describes these controls.
Change the wallpaper, clock, or widgets
Always-On does not have a separate layout to customize: it reflects the iPhone’s Lock Screen. Edit that screen to change what appears in its dimmed view.
- Wake the iPhone and touch and hold the Lock Screen.
- Tap Customize, then choose the Lock Screen editing controls.
- Use the wallpaper controls to change the background, or the clock controls to change its appearance.
- Tap Add Widgets to choose widgets, then tap or drag them into the available slots.
- Finish editing to save the Lock Screen.
The widgets available and the layout you can use depend on installed apps and the space available on the Lock Screen. See Apple’s guides to personalizing your iPhone, adding and editing widgets, and accessing features from the Lock Screen.

- Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.
Why does the Always-On display turn off?
Always-On may switch off automatically in situations Apple identifies as unsuitable for keeping the screen visible. Check whether the iPhone is:
- Face down or obstructed.
- Away from a paired Apple Watch.
- In a CarPlay session or using Continuity Camera.
- In Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus.
- At the user’s usual bedtime.
These are automatic behaviors, not additional wallpaper or notification settings. Apple’s Always-On guide lists the conditions.

Is StandBy the same as Always-On?
No. Always-On keeps a dimmed Lock Screen visible on a supported, locked iPhone. StandBy is a separate charging mode that presents clocks, photos, or widgets when an iPhone is charging, stationary, and positioned on its side. In StandBy, swipe to move among its views. On supported Always-On models, StandBy can remain visible; on other models, wake it by tapping the screen, nudging the table, or asking Siri. A charger is required, but MagSafe is not; Apple describes MagSafe as a way for StandBy to remember a preferred view for a charging location. See Apple’s StandBy guide.

Always-On is limited to supported iPhone models. Apple’s cited materials confirm support for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, but those examples are not a complete current compatibility list. Check whether Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display appears on your iPhone, or consult Apple’s support information for your exact model. Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro specifications and Always On Human Interface Guidelines describe the feature and supported Lock Screen content.
