To make sports alerts more useful on X, turn on post notifications only for a few key team, league, or reporter accounts, then disable push categories you do not want and mute specific terms when needed. These controls work at different levels: no single setting creates a complete sports-only filter.
Choose which sports accounts can send post alerts
For timely updates from a small group of accounts, start with the sources rather than enabling more general notifications. X’s mobile notification guidance, accessed October 7, 2026, documents post alerts from an individual followed account.
- Open the team, league, or reporter’s profile.
- Tap the notification icon on the profile.
- Choose All posts for every post, or Only posts with live video if that is the update type you want. Choose None to cancel post alerts from that account.
Use this for a short list of high-value sources. If alerts from one account become too frequent, change that account’s setting to None; muting words will not stop its opted-in post alerts. X documents the profile control in its mobile notifications guidance.
Turn off push categories you do not need
Account alerts are separate from broad push notification categories. On mobile, X’s documented route is:

- Tap your profile icon.
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Tap Notifications, then Preferences.
- Open Push notifications and turn off categories you do not want.
Categories can include mentions, replies, likes, new followers, recommendations, news, Spaces, and other notification types. Their names and availability may differ by app version; X’s mobile notifications page describes the settings.
Mute event terms or spoilers selectively
Use muted words for recurring or time-limited noise, such as a particular event term or spoiler phrase. In the Notifications area, open its settings and go to Muted → Muted words. Add the word, phrase, username, emoji, or hashtag, then choose whether it applies to notifications, the Home timeline, or both; choose whose posts to mute and how long the rule should last.

X offers 24-hour, 7-day, 30-day, and Forever durations. A temporary duration can help with an event-specific term you may want to see again later. Muting is case-insensitive, and muting a word also covers its hashtag. X Help Center describes the feature as removing matching posts from selected areas in How to use advanced muting options.
- Muted posts remain available in search.
- Muted words do not stop opted-in mobile post alerts from followed accounts.
- If a followed account’s post alerts are the problem, turn off that account’s profile notification setting instead.
Use general filters only if noise remains
The quality filter and advanced filters can reduce some unwanted notifications, but they are not sports-specific controls. X says its quality filter can filter lower-quality notifications, including duplicates or apparently automated content, and does not filter notifications from people you follow or have recently interacted with. Advanced filters let you limit notifications from selected account types. Details are in X’s Notifications timeline guidance.

These controls address notification quality or account characteristics, not whether a post is about a sport, team, or game. Use them as a broad cleanup step rather than a replacement for choosing sources and muting particular terms.
Know when muting an account is appropriate
Muting an account differs from unfollowing or blocking it. X says a muted account is not notified that you muted it, but the handling of its replies and mentions depends in part on whether you follow that account. Review X’s account-muting guidance before using this control. If you only want to stop post alerts, the profile-level None option is more targeted.

Review settings after the game or event
After a game or event, revisit temporary muted words and account alerts. Remove terms you no longer need, and restore alerts only for sources you still want to hear from. This keeps short-lived filters from becoming permanent blind spots.
