Open Apple menu > System Settings > Trackpad, find the gesture that’s bothering you, and switch it off or change it. You don’t have to disable multi-touch altogether. Magic Mouse gestures live in System Settings > Mouse, and three-finger drag and trackpad scrolling are controlled separately under Accessibility. What you see depends on your Mac, the connected device and your macOS version.

Where each gesture setting lives

What you want to change Where to go
Tap to click, secondary click, look up System Settings > Trackpad > Point & Click
Natural scrolling, pinch zoom, Smart zoom, rotate System Settings > Trackpad > Scroll & Zoom
Page swiping, full-screen app switching, Notification Centre, Mission Control, App Exposé, Show Desktop System Settings > Trackpad > More Gestures
Magic Mouse gestures System Settings > Mouse
Three-finger drag, scroll speed, turning off trackpad scrolling System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control > Trackpad Options

Apple documents these locations in its Trackpad settings guide and its Multi-Touch gestures article (published May 6, 2026). Not every Mac shows every option; the settings depend on the hardware and macOS version.

Turn off or change a trackpad gesture

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Settings. On older macOS versions this app is called System Preferences.
  2. Select Trackpad in the sidebar.
  3. Open Point & Click, Scroll & Zoom or More Gestures, depending on the behavior.
  4. Switch the toggle off, or use the pop-up menu to pick a different gesture type.

If you aren’t sure what a gesture does, the settings show an animated demonstration of each one. Apple’s own summary: “There you can turn a gesture off, change the type of gesture, and learn which gestures work with your Mac.” (Apple Support)

Common culprits

  • Accidental clicks while typing: turn off Tap to click in Point & Click.
  • Pop-up dictionary definitions: change or disable Look up & data detectors.
  • Scrolling feels backwards: toggle Natural scrolling in Scroll & Zoom.
  • Pages jump back or forward when you scroll sideways: adjust the page-swipe option in More Gestures.
  • Screen flips to Mission Control or Show Desktop: change or turn off those entries in More Gestures.
  • Unwanted zooming or rotating: switch off pinch zoom, Smart zoom or Rotate in Scroll & Zoom.

Customize Magic Mouse gestures

With a Magic Mouse connected, open System Settings > Mouse. Apple lists secondary click, scrolling, Smart zoom, Mission Control, full-screen app switching and page swiping as configurable. Per Apple’s gesture support page, USB-C Magic Mouse models require macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later.

Enable three-finger drag

Three-finger drag lets you move windows and items by dragging with three fingers, with no click. It isn’t in the Trackpad pane; it’s an Accessibility option, and Apple says it applies to trackpads that support Force Touch. (Apple Support, published December 5, 2025)

  1. Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control.
  2. Click Trackpad Options.
  3. Turn on Use trackpad for dragging.
  4. Choose Three Finger Drag from the menu.

On older macOS versions the location is Mouse & Trackpad and the checkbox is Enable dragging; click OK to confirm. To turn it off, reverse the setting.

Disable trackpad scrolling or change scroll speed

Apple says trackpad scrolling can be turned off in Accessibility settings. Scroll speed is found in the same Accessibility > Pointer Control > Trackpad Options area. (Apple Support) Labels vary slightly between versions.

When your screen doesn’t match these steps

  • Finger counts differ: Apple’s examples use four fingers for Mission Control and switching full-screen apps, but a footnote says some macOS versions use three. Trust the options and animations on your own screen.
  • Missing options: a gesture hidden on your Mac isn’t supported by that device or macOS version.
  • No Trackpad or Mouse pane: these panes appear for a built-in trackpad or a connected accessory. A desktop Mac without a trackpad or Magic Mouse connected won’t show their settings. An external Magic Trackpad is optional, and you don’t need to buy one just to change gestures.

Apple also documents a general route to view and customize mouse or trackpad gestures.
