To customize Notability, open Settings from the Library. Use the app-wide settings for appearance, new-note defaults, typing, handwriting, drawing, gestures, and toolbox choices. To change the template or view for just one note, open that note’s Options menu instead. Available controls can differ by device, app version, and Apple Pencil model.
Open Notability’s Settings
Go to the Library and select the Settings icon. Notability groups app-wide controls there, including appearance, Note Editor defaults, typing, handwriting and drawing, gestures, media defaults, transcription, and status-bar visibility. Labels and available options may vary between versions and platforms; see Notability’s Settings: Appearances, Tools, & Gestures guide for its current overview.
Change Notability’s appearance
In Settings, open the appearance controls to choose how Notability looks. The listed choices include matching the app to iOS Appearance, Night Mode, colorful folders, and themes such as Light, Dark, Dark Blue, and Jet Black. The settings guide also lists Keep iPad Awake, which affects display behavior while using the app. The exact presentation of these controls depends on your device and app version.
Choose defaults for new notes
Use the Note Editor’s document defaults to control how new notes start. These are app-wide defaults; they do not automatically change the template or view of an existing note.

- Default title: Add a title automatically, with the option to include a date or time.
- Default template: Choose paper such as Plain, Rule, Grid, or Dot. To set a template for future notes, go to Library Settings > Note Editor > Template and select the default, as described in Notability’s Custom Templates and Note Background guide.
- Default text box paper: Set the paper style used for text boxes.
- Default note view: Choose Seamless or Single page as the starting view for new notes.
Adjust typing and text behavior
Notability’s typing settings let you choose text formatting defaults, including font, size, and color. You can also adjust spelling behavior, whether tapping anywhere starts typing, and text-to-speech speed. These options are useful if you regularly type notes or combine typed text with handwriting.
Customize handwriting, drawing, and gestures
Settings include controls that can change how writing and drawing behave. Depending on the platform and version, options include handwriting-recognition language, math conversion, straight-line and shape detection, palm detection, and automatic eraser deselection. Ruler units can be set to metric or imperial.

Check Apple Pencil compatibility
Apple Pencil features depend on the Pencil model and setup. Notability’s Writing with Apple Pencil article, dated August 28, 2026, states that Apple Pencil (USB-C) does not support pressure sensitivity. The guide describes haptics and hover as model- and setup-dependent; its listed haptics conditions are Notability Cloud, iPad Pro, Apple Pencil Pro, and iOS 18 or later. Check the support article and your device’s compatibility before relying on a specific Pencil feature.
Set gestures
Gesture settings include tapping and holding to enter Zoom View while handwriting, configurable undo and redo gestures, and a four-finger tap for Focus Mode—or an option to disable that gesture. If a label or path differs in your app, use the current Settings screen as the reference.

Change the template or view for one note
To change an individual note without changing the default for future notes, open the note and select Options in the upper-right corner. Choose Template settings to select a template from Gallery or My Templates, or create a custom one, then apply it. The Options menu also contains view settings. Notability’s Options menu article explains the note-level controls.
A custom template can be adjusted for size, orientation, paper color, and type. You can create one from an existing note page or import a PDF as a note background; the template guide also describes creating a template from the first page of a multi-page PDF. Gallery templates can be downloaded for use, but downloaded files are stored locally, so download the template on each device where you want it. Notability lists paper sizes including Letter, Legal, Tabloid, A3, A4, A5, A6, and A7, and recommends Letter (Optimized) for viewing notes across iOS and Mac.

Customize the toolbox
Notability’s toolbox can be moved, and its style tray can keep frequently used tools close at hand. You can customize presets—including pen color, line weight, and style—and use Settings to choose which tools appear in the toolbox. See Getting Started with Notability for the toolbox overview.
Find account, subscription, and help controls
The Settings screen also includes account, subscription, AI, Learn, transcription, default-language, help, and diagnostic areas. Notability’s Settings: Account, Subscription, & Help article maps those additional sections.
