To change how Live Captions look in Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Captions. Choose a built-in style, check its preview, then select Edit to customize the selected style. You can also reach the same Captions settings from an open Live Captions window.
Change Live Captions style in Settings
- Open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Captions.
- Under Caption style, open the menu and select a built-in style. Check the preview to see how it appears.
- To customize the selected preset, choose Edit and adjust the options available on your Windows build.
Windows provides a default built-in style whose colors are suited to your device’s light or dark mode. Other styles can be assessed in the preview against the content you commonly watch or listen to; choose the one that is easiest for you to read.
Open style settings from Live Captions
- In the Live Captions window, select its Settings button.
- Choose Preferences, then Caption style. Windows opens the Accessibility settings for Captions, where you can choose a preset, preview it, or edit it.
Style, position, and window size are separate controls
Caption style changes the captions’ visual presentation. The Live Captions window also has controls for where it appears and how much text it can show, but those do not customize the style.
- Position: In the Live Captions window, select Settings > Position. Dock captions above or below the screen in reserved desktop space, or use a floating overlay that you can reposition to avoid covering another app.
- More visible lines: Resize the Live Captions window with a mouse, touch, or keyboard. A larger window can show more lines; resizing does not change caption style.
Turn on Live Captions and complete first-time setup
Microsoft says Live Captions is available in Windows 11, version 22H2 and later. You can turn it on from Quick Settings, press Windows key + Ctrl + L, open Start > All apps > Accessibility > Live captions, or go to Settings > Accessibility > Captions. On first use, Windows asks for consent to process voice data on the device and prompts you to download language files for on-device speech recognition. Microsoft’s Live Captions instructions describe these setup steps.

Microsoft states that audio processing and caption generation from detected voice data occur on-device; it says the audio, voice data, and captions are not sent to Microsoft or the cloud, and generated captions are not stored on the device or in the cloud. This is Microsoft’s claim about Live Captions processing, not a statement about every data flow in Windows. See Microsoft’s feature documentation.
If the editing options differ
The available options shown after you select Edit may depend on your Windows build. Microsoft’s current instructions document choosing a preset, viewing its preview, and editing the selected preset, but do not enumerate every edit field. Follow the controls shown on your device rather than expecting a particular set of color or text options. For the documented workflow, see Microsoft’s caption settings instructions.
