Adjust the image inside the shape, then make the shape’s height and width equal for a true circle. If you use Word for the web, its Picture Styles offer an oval-style workaround, but not the desktop Crop to Shape command.
Crop a picture into a circle in desktop Word
- Insert and select the image. Choose Insert > Picture and add your picture. Select it to show the Picture Format tab.
- Apply an oval crop. On Picture Format, open the arrow beneath Crop, choose Crop Shape, and select Oval. Microsoft’s crop-shape instructions use “Oval”; the result is circular only when its height and width are equal. Microsoft’s crop-to-shape instructions
- Make the oval a circle. If the crop looks stretched, set the picture’s height and width to the same value using Word’s size controls. The controls let you enter exact dimensions; changing the two dimensions unequally produces an ellipse. See Microsoft’s Word sizing instructions.
- Position the subject. While the crop is active, move the image within the frame so the face or other important detail sits where you want it. Adjust the crop handles if needed, then select Crop again or click outside the picture to finish. The exact control layout can differ by Word version and platform.
Choose whether to fill the circle or keep the whole picture
Word’s crop fitting options change what is visible inside the shape:
- Fill covers the circle edge to edge. It may cut off parts of the image outside the circular frame.
- Fit keeps the entire picture visible within the shape, but can leave empty space near the margins.
After choosing either option, reposition the picture within the crop to place the focal point. Microsoft explains Fill and Fit for shape crops.
If you use Word for the web
Word for the web does not include the desktop app’s dedicated Crop to Shape command. Microsoft describes an alternative: select the picture, open Picture > Picture Styles, choose a basic oval style, and adjust the crop handles. This is a web-version workaround rather than the desktop crop workflow, and menu availability may change with updates. Microsoft’s instructions for cropping a picture to fit a shape

Remove cropped image areas before sharing
A crop normally hides the parts outside the frame without deleting them from the document. Those hidden areas may still be visible to someone else. In desktop Office, select the picture and choose Picture Format > Compress Pictures, then select Delete cropped areas of pictures. Microsoft says removal of cropped areas is available in Microsoft 365 desktop apps; the Word-for-the-web workflow does not provide this deletion capability. If the hidden parts contain sensitive information, remove them before sharing the file. Microsoft’s instructions for cropping a picture in Office

Microsoft’s crop-to-shape guidance lists Word for Microsoft 365 and Word 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024, with Windows and Mac variants where indicated. Ribbon labels and placement can vary by platform and release, so look for the Picture Format tab and the arrow beneath Crop if your layout differs. The web version has the limitation and alternative described above. Check Microsoft’s applicability details
