To create a website thumbnail with GrabzIt, capture the target URL as an image, set the browser viewport that the page will render in, and set the output width and height to the thumbnail dimensions. Keep the output smaller than the viewport and use the same aspect ratio to avoid stretching. For a server-side REST request, keep your application key out of browser code.
How GrabzIt thumbnail sizing works
GrabzIt treats page rendering and image resizing as separate controls. The browser dimensions determine the viewport used to render the page; output dimensions determine the resulting image size. A 320 × 240 thumbnail, for example, should be rendered in a larger viewport with the same 4:3 ratio if you want the preview to retain its proportions. GrabzIt’s thumbnail guidance recommends making the output smaller than the browser width and height while preserving their ratio. GrabzIt thumbnail guidance

Create a thumbnail with GrabzIt REST
The following is the documented REST request shape. URL-encode the target URL and substitute your GrabzIt application key. This example requests a 320 × 240 JPG rendered from a 1366 × 1024 viewport; select viewport dimensions and output ratio that suit your page and display.

For a quick manual check, GrabzIt’s setup guide shows a direct GET request as a starting point for cURL or Postman. In a production integration, use your server to make the REST request and handle the returned image or the documented callback workflow. GrabzIt REST API setup

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Build the URL with the capture parameters and properly encode the target page URL.
- Send the request from your server, not from code delivered to the browser.
- Save or return the resulting image where your thumbnail feature needs it.
- For asynchronous delivery, configure the optional callback URL described in the REST reference.
Keep the application key private
GrabzIt explicitly warns: “Do not use this API on the client side, it will expose your Application Key!” Keep REST calls on a server you control. If capture needs to be initiated in a browser, GrabzIt points developers to its JavaScript API and its authorized-domain configuration instead. GrabzIt REST API reference
Choose format and capture scope
Image format
JPG is the documented default. GrabzIt lists JPG, PNG, WEBP, BMP, and TIFF as supported image formats. Its image documentation recommends PNG when JPG quality is not adequate for a screenshot; it does not give a universal quality or file-size comparison, so choose based on the text, graphics, and delivery needs of your preview. GrabzIt supported image formats
Viewport thumbnail or full-page image
A viewport thumbnail represents the page as rendered in a chosen browser window. A full-page capture instead aims to include the entire document and may be taller than a typical preview card. GrabzIt documents full-length settings, but -1 is parameter-specific: the REST reference uses it for full browser height and for unreduced thumbnail height, while full-page examples set browser height and output dimensions to -1. Do not treat it as a universal “full page” switch; set it only in the parameter context documented for your intended capture. GrabzIt full-page screenshot guidance

REST or a language library?
GrabzIt documents both REST and native libraries. Use REST when your application already handles HTTP requests and image responses; use a library when its helpers fit your language and workflow. Its thumbnail examples cover ASP.NET, Java, JavaScript, Node.js, Perl, PHP, Python, REST, and Ruby. GrabzIt thumbnail examples

| REST versus language library | REST suits direct HTTP integration; a library may provide helpers for your stack. | GrabzIt documents both approaches; select based on your existing request and response handling. |
| Server-side REST versus JavaScript API | Server-side REST is appropriate when your backend initiates capture; JavaScript API is the documented browser-side route. | Client-side REST exposes the application key, according to GrabzIt. |
| JPG versus PNG or another supported format | Choose based on screenshot quality and the format your application consumes. | JPG is the default; PNG is recommended when JPG quality is insufficient. |
| Viewport thumbnail versus full-page capture | Viewport capture suits compact page previews; full-page capture is for the whole document. | Full-page parameter behavior differs by parameter; follow the REST reference. |
Dimensions, aspect ratio, and edge cases
The REST reference lists defaults of 1366 pixels for browser width and 1170 pixels for browser height. It documents a maximum browser width and height of 10000 pixels. These are reference values and can change; check the live API documentation when configuring an integration. The reference does not establish one universal maximum for output height: that limit depends on the package. GrabzIt REST API dimensions and parameters
- If only output width is supplied, GrabzIt documents output height as proportional.
- If both output width and height are absent or zero, the output dimensions match the final image.
- For predictable thumbnail cards, provide both output dimensions and preserve the ratio of the viewport.
- Do not confuse viewport size with output size: the former affects rendering; the latter affects the delivered image.
Troubleshoot common thumbnail problems
The preview looks stretched
The output ratio may not match the browser viewport ratio, or the chosen output dimensions may be forcing an unsuitable shape. Set both dimensions intentionally and match the viewport ratio, or supply only output width if proportional height is appropriate.

The capture is too small or shows unexpected layout
Check bwidth and bheight, not only width and height. A page can render a different responsive layout at a different viewport even when the final thumbnail dimensions are unchanged.
The image is blurry or text quality is poor
Try PNG if JPG quality is not adequate for the screenshot, as GrabzIt recommends. The documentation does not establish a single best format or quality setting for every page.
The application key is exposed
Move the REST request to your backend. For browser-initiated capture, use GrabzIt’s JavaScript API and configure authorized domains as its documentation specifies.

The full page is not captured
Verify the full-length setting for the particular parameter you are changing. GrabzIt uses -1 in more than one context, so a value that controls browser height does not automatically mean the same thing as an output-dimension value.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
The cited GrabzIt documentation establishes parameter behavior and integration routes, but does not provide a performance benchmark, reliability figure, or current pricing and quota information. For a production thumbnail feature, measure capture latency and image size in your own workload, and confirm current plan limits and package-dependent output constraints in GrabzIt’s live documentation before setting operational limits. A callback is documented for asynchronous delivery when you do not want to treat capture as an immediate synchronous response.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; for a thumbnail, you can request the target page and output dimensions. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and output options.
