For a basic straight stair in SketchUp, calculate the rise and run first, model one tread as a component, then use Move/Copy to repeat it forward and upward. This keeps the steps consistent and easier to edit. Check the resulting dimensions against the requirements for your project and location: a correctly modeled stair is not automatically code-compliant.

Plan the stair dimensions before modeling

Start with the actual floor-to-floor rise, intended stair width, tread depth (the going), and the number of risers required by the design. Divide the total rise by the riser count to find the height of each riser. Use the resulting rise and going as the vertical and horizontal offsets for each repeated tread.

There is no single riser height or tread depth that applies to every stair. Requirements depend on the project’s use and jurisdiction, so verify the dimensions independently rather than treating an example or an extension’s defaults as a universal standard.

Build a straight flight with native SketchUp tools

1. Draw one tread

Use SketchUp’s drawing tools to make a face with the planned width and depth. SketchUp geometry is built from edges and faces; use Push/Pull if the tread needs thickness. See SketchUp’s guide to drawing basic shapes.

2. Make the tread a component

Select the tread geometry and create a component before copying it. Components are reusable objects kept separate from connected geometry, and editing a component definition can update its instances. This is useful if you later need to adjust the tread. Read SketchUp’s component documentation.

3. Move, copy, and array the tread

Use Move/Copy to place a copy one going forward and one riser higher. Then create a repeated array for the remaining treads, keeping each copy at the same offsets. SketchUp School demonstrates this component-and-array approach in How to Model Stairs in SketchUp. The exact number of treads and risers depends on the design; do not assume they are interchangeable counts.

4. Check the flight and add supporting geometry

Inspect the total rise, the relationship to the landing and upper floor, stair width, and any gaps or overlaps. Keep larger stair assemblies grouped or componentized so their geometry does not merge with surrounding model geometry. Add landings, stringers, and rails to suit the design and dimensions.

Follow Me can extrude a profile along a path for suitable continuous details, such as a rail or trim, but it does not generate stairs. For this tool, the profile should be approximately perpendicular to the path, and grouped path and profile geometry must share the same group. See SketchUp’s Follow Me guide.

When to use a stair extension

For an occasional simple flight, the native component-and-array method gives direct control over the geometry. If you create stairs often or need configurable geometry, an extension may reduce repetitive setup. Compare options based on the inputs they support, customizability, compatibility with your SketchUp version, and whether you can check their output against project requirements. The available listings do not establish controlled speed or accuracy differences.

Option What its listing describes Points to verify
StairUp Creates stairs using a walking line, step dimensions, and height; the listing gives compatibility with SketchUp 2024–2026. Its stated defaults are based on Dutch building requirements. Check local requirements and confirm compatibility and current terms for your installation. StairUp on Extension Warehouse.
Instant Stair The listing describes stairs from standard shapes, a center line, or a 2D plan, with preset or custom styles and metric or feet-and-inches units. Confirm current features, terms, and compatibility with your SketchUp version. Instant Stair on Extension Warehouse.

Model dimensions still need independent verification

SketchUp can represent the dimensions you enter, but it cannot establish that those dimensions are suitable for a particular building or compliant with the rules that apply there. Confirm the project’s riser height, tread depth, width, landings, and other applicable requirements with the relevant local guidance or qualified project professional before relying on the model for construction.
