Google Drive’s Gemini audio overviews turn supported files into English-language, conversational summaries—not word-for-word recordings. To create one, open a supported file in Drive on the web and choose Create audio overview. You’ll need an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan, and you must leave the tab and side panel open until generation finishes.
What Google Drive audio overviews do
An audio overview is a spoken summary of a document, rather than a complete read-aloud of its contents. Google introduced the feature as a way to turn long, text-heavy PDFs into podcast-style summaries. Its launch announcement described a typical overview as two to 10 minutes long, but that is not a guaranteed duration for every file. Google’s launch announcement
Although the feature was introduced for PDFs, Google Drive Help now lists several supported input types. The feature is available in English, according to Google’s current instructions. Google Drive Help

- Microsoft Word documents and PowerPoint presentations

How to make an audio overview
- On a computer, open Google Drive and open the supported file you want summarized.
- Select Create audio overview near the upper-right controls.
- Wait for the overview to finish generating, then play it from the side panel.
- Keep the Drive tab and side panel open throughout generation. Refreshing the page or closing either before the process finishes prevents the audio file from generating.
You can’t generate an overview by asking for one in a Drive side-panel prompt; use the file’s Create audio overview control instead. Creation happens on the web. After it is ready, Google emails you a link and saves the result in My Drive’s Audio overviews folder. Saved overviews can be accessed on the web, iOS, and Android. Google Drive Help

Who can use it, and how many can they create?
Audio overviews are not available to every Drive account. Google requires an eligible Workspace or Google AI plan. The limits below are from Google’s Workspace usage-limits page, last updated September 24, 2026; figures are per user per day, and the daily limits reset at midnight Pacific Time. Google Drive Help also gives a general instruction of 20 overviews per day, while the Workspace limits page specifies higher allowances for some tiers. Because eligibility and quotas depend on account type, check Google’s current plan-level limits if the control is missing or you need to confirm your allowance. Google’s November 2025 launch announcement listed the plans available at launch; that list is historical and is not a reliable substitute for current eligibility details.

What to keep in mind before listening
- It summarizes rather than reads everything aloud. For contracts, research papers, or other high-consequence documents, consult the original file for exact wording and details.
- It is English-only. Google’s current Drive Help page lists English as the available language.
- Generation is web-only. You can listen to saved audio on Drive for web, iOS, or Android, but start the creation process in a computer web browser.
- Generation must finish in the open session. Closing the tab or side panel, or refreshing, interrupts the process.
