In Basecamp 5, add the Automatic Check-ins tool to a project if it is not already there. Open the tool, select + New Question, enter your question, choose its schedule and time, then select the people to ask.
Check that you are using Basecamp 5
The steps below are for Basecamp 5. Basecamp’s help index lists separate help centers for Basecamp 5, Basecamp 2, and Basecamp Classic, so button names and screens may differ in older versions. If you use Basecamp 2 or Classic, open the matching help center rather than assuming these directions apply.
Add Automatic Check-ins to a project
- Open the project.
- Use the project’s + control to add Automatic Check-ins if the tool is not already present. Basecamp’s Basecamp 5 project setup guide describes adding tools to a project.
- Open Automatic Check-ins and click + New Question.
- Type the question, set how often and at what time it should go out, then choose who should be asked. Basecamp’s Automatic Check-ins help page documents these settings.
For example, you could ask “What are you working on this week?” every Monday at 9 a.m.—the recurring weekly prompt shown on Basecamp’s features page. The selected participants receive a notification when it is time to answer, and project members can see the responses.
Choose a useful schedule and audience
Set a cadence people can keep up with
Choose a frequency and time that fit the question. A weekly Monday check-in can surface plans at the start of the workweek; a different question may call for a different cadence. Basecamp’s help page says most projects need only one or two check-in questions and cautions against stacking them on Friday morning. Start with a small number of well-spaced prompts.

Select who should be asked
Choose the project participants whose answers are useful for that question. Adding someone to a check-in also automatically subscribes them to new answers, so give them a heads-up when you include them.
Edit, pause, resume, or delete a question
Open the check-in to manage it. Use Edit to change the question, frequency, time, or participants. To pause future prompts, select Stop asking this question. To resume a paused prompt, open Edit and select Start asking this question. To remove it, open the ••• menu and choose Put in the trash.

Manage answer notifications separately from reminders
Stopping a recurring question controls reminders to answer; it is different from unsubscribing from notifications when other people post answers. To stop answer notifications, use the unsubscribe link in an email notification or the check-in’s ••• menu. This is useful if you want to keep a prompt active but no longer need updates about everyone else’s responses.
