Plan the screenshot set around supported devices
First identify which Play Console device sections apply to your app: phone, tablet or Chromebook, Wear OS, Android TV, Android Automotive OS, or Android XR. You can add up to eight screenshots for each supported device type. A set prepared only for phones may not meet the requirements for another form factor.
Choose screens that make the app’s actual purpose and strongest features apparent. A useful sequence starts with its most recognizable or useful screen, then shows distinct features or outcomes instead of several near-identical views. This sequencing is an editorial approach based on Google’s guidance to show core features and prioritize the interface in the first three images; it is not a separate Play rule.
Google treats listing screenshots as previews of the real app experience. Keep them accurate to the version users can install: discrepancies between listing assets and app functionality may lead to rejection. See Google’s publishing tips and preview asset requirements.

Meet the general file and size requirements
For the general listing requirements, use JPEG or 24-bit PNG without alpha transparency. Each screenshot must be at least 320 pixels and no more than 3,840 pixels in each dimension; its longest dimension cannot exceed twice its shortest. Google also calls for at least two screenshots across different device types. Consult the device-specific sections in Play Console for additional mandatory conditions.

The four-image app and three-image game sets are Google’s highly recommended guidance for eligibility in recommendation formats, not replacements for the general baseline. Meeting a recommendation does not guarantee placement. Confirm the current requirements for your device section before upload.
Check the rules for each form factor
Phones
Use screenshots that reflect the app’s actual phone UI, in an orientation that suits its normal use. The general file and dimension limits apply. For app recommendation eligibility, Google recommends at least four high-resolution images in portrait or landscape at the ratios and minimum sizes above.

Tablets and Chromebooks
Google’s guide calls for at least four large-screen screenshots between 1,080 and 7,680 pixels, in 16:9 landscape or 9:16 portrait. Keep overlay text away from edges where it might be cut off on Play homepages. These large-screen requirements differ from the general listing limits, so follow the device-specific guidance in Console.
Wear OS apps and watch faces
Provide at least one screenshot of the current version. It must show only the app or watch-face interface: no device frame, added text, decorative graphics, or background. Use a square 1:1 image at least 384 × 384 pixels, without transparency or masking. For a customizable watch face, show more than one available configuration.
Android TV
A TV-enabled app needs at least one TV screenshot before publishing, and an Android TV banner is also required. TV screenshots appear only on TV devices, so include an image that shows the real TV experience rather than relying on phone assets.
Android Automotive OS
Requirements depend on app category. For apps that provide Automotive screenshots, Google’s guide calls for at least two portrait images at 800 × 1,280 and two landscape images at 1,024 × 768. Use generic system UI rather than an individual vehicle or original equipment manufacturer’s interface.

Android XR
Upload four to eight PNG or JPEG screenshots, no larger than 8 MB each, in an 8:5 aspect ratio. The recommended resolution is 3,840 × 2,400; the minimum is 1,920 × 1,200.

Capture and compose images that represent the app
- Open the current app build. Navigate to the screens that best explain its real functionality. Avoid unreleased features or content a user cannot access in the version being listed.
- Capture clean screens. Check orientation and scaling, and remove unnecessary status-bar clutter. Google advises against excess notification-bar elements and recommends full battery, Wi-Fi, and mobile-service indicators.
- Choose distinct moments. Make each image add useful information: a core screen, a key feature, or an outcome the app genuinely provides. Keep the actual interface prominent, especially in the first three images.
- Add graphic treatment only when it helps. A short explanatory tagline can clarify the experience, but Google says it should take up no more than 20% of the image. Avoid promotional claims and calls to action in the screenshot itself.
- Export and inspect the result. Check pixel dimensions, file type, ratio, compression, and readability at small display sizes before uploading.
Do not use blurry, distorted, pixelated, stretched, sideways, or heavily compressed images. Keep text legible and avoid content likely to become stale, such as time-limited offers. Google advises against ranking or award claims, testimonials, pricing or discounts, and “Download now” calls to action in these assets. Check that you have rights to any third-party logos or characters used.

Localize text and write useful alt text
If a screenshot contains language-specific labels or promotional text, make separate assets for the relevant languages rather than presenting untranslated overlays. Google’s store-listing guidance says policies apply to translations and recommends complementary visual styles with minimal text. See Google’s store listing best practices.
Add concise, context-specific alt text for each image. Google recommends descriptions of 140 characters or fewer. Describe what the particular screenshot shows rather than repeating a generic app name or using identical text for the whole set.

Upload screenshots in Play Console
- Open the app in Play Console and go to Main store listing.
- Find the Graphics section.
- Open the subsection for each device type your app supports.
- Add the corresponding screenshots and any required device-specific assets, such as the Android TV banner.
- Review the displayed assets and resolve validation errors before submitting the listing change.
Assets added to the main store listing can appear across test tracks and on Play surfaces beyond the app detail page. Prepare each image for its intended form factor and placement, not just for the phone listing.
