To create or update a business listing on Google Search and Maps, use Google Business Profile—Google’s official name for what many people call a “Google Search Profile.” First check whether your business is eligible and whether a listing already exists. Then add or claim the correct listing, complete the verification Google offers, and edit it from Google Search or the Google Maps app.
Before you create a profile: check eligibility and ownership
Google requires a business to make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours. Online-only businesses, lead-generation companies and businesses represented at a remote mailbox are examples of businesses that do not qualify. Only the business owner or an authorized representative should claim and manage a profile. See Google’s Business eligibility and ownership guidelines.
Choose the profile setup that reflects where customers actually receive service:
- Storefront: Customers visit the business at its public location.
- Service-area business: The business visits or delivers to customers and does not serve them at its listed address. Hide the address and specify the areas served.
- Hybrid business: Customers visit the business and it also serves them elsewhere. You can show the public address and specify a service area.
A business with more than one eligible, staffed location should represent each real location accurately rather than creating duplicate profiles for the same place.

Create, claim or request access to the right listing
- Sign in to the Google Account that should own or manage the profile.
- Search Google Search and Google Maps for the business name and location. Check carefully for an existing listing before adding one.
- If no listing exists, go to business.google.com/add and follow the prompts to add the business.
- If an unverified listing exists, find it in Google Maps and select Claim this business or Manage now, depending on the option shown.
- If someone else has already verified the listing, request ownership through Google’s ownership-request process instead of making a duplicate.
- Complete the verification method offered for the profile.
Google says creating or claiming an eligible Business Profile is free. You do not need to pay a third party to create or verify a basic profile. Details and available steps are on Google’s guide to adding or claiming a Business Profile.
Complete the verification Google offers
Google determines which verification methods are available for a particular business. Options can depend on the business, public information, region and opening hours; you cannot choose a method that Google has not offered. Follow the instructions shown in the profile. Depending on the listing, Google may offer phone or text, email, a live video call, a postcard or a recorded video. Some businesses may be asked to use more than one method. For a live video call
Be prepared to show the business location, the business or its equipment, and evidence that you manage or represent it. The exact instructions depend on the verification prompt.
For a recorded video
Google’s instructions require a live, unedited, unique and complete recording that is at least 30 seconds long. Capture and upload it through the Business Profile on a mobile device. Show enough to establish the location and business operations, as well as your connection to or management of the business. Do not film sensitive personal or financial information. Google says review can take up to five working days. Follow the current recorded-video verification instructions.

For a postcard or another method
A postcard is not available for every business, and Google may change which options it offers. Use only the method displayed for your profile; do not assume a method available to another business, or in another region, will be available to yours.
Edit the profile after signing in
Use the Google Account linked to the profile. The controls may differ by device or operating system, and some businesses may need to verify before editing.

- On Google Search: Search for the business while signed in, open the Business Profile controls, select Edit profile, make the changes and select Save.
- In the Google Maps app: Open Business, tap Edit profile, make the changes and save.
Depending on the profile, editable details include the business name, categories, address and map pin, service area, hours, phone number, website, attributes, photos and videos, and business description. Google reviews edits before they appear; some changes can take longer to show. Moving to a new address after verification requires verification again. Use accurate business information
- Enter the business’s real-world name, not a string of extra keywords.
- Choose the primary category that best describes what the business does. Do not add categories simply to include more search terms.
- Use an accurate address and map pin, and make sure the address is public only when customers are served there.
- Keep hours and contact details current. Use a website that represents that individual business location.
Set a service area that reflects actual coverage
For service-area businesses, enter the cities, postal codes or other areas actually served rather than drawing a radius. Google’s current guidance allows up to 20 service areas and says the overall area generally should not extend beyond about two hours’ driving time from the business base. Approved service-area changes may take up to 48 hours to display. These are Google Help’s operational guidelines; the documentation does not state a publication date. What is different for businesses in India and Canada?
The basic create, claim and edit workflow is the same in both countries. Google’s India-localized editing guidance and Canada-localized verification guidance describe the shared process: editing a profile in India and verifying a profile in Canada.
Verification options are not guaranteed to be identical across businesses or regions. Use the method shown in your own profile, and enter the address and contact information in a format that accurately reflects the local business. Google’s current profile screen is authoritative for the listing’s available options.

When changes are delayed or access is blocked
- The business already appears on Google: Claim the existing listing if it is unverified; request ownership if someone else verified it.
- No verification option fits your expectations: Google selects the available methods. Follow the options displayed rather than creating another profile to try to trigger a different method.
- An edit is not visible yet: Google reviews changes before publishing them, and some updates take longer to appear. Check the profile again after processing.
- You moved the business: Update the address and map pin, then complete verification again as requested.
- You cannot edit: Confirm you are signed in to the Google Account associated with the profile, and check whether Google requires verification first.
