You can use Claude to analyze an uploaded image, or create a code-based visual in an Artifact—such as an SVG illustration or interactive component—and ask for animation as part of that artifact. This is an SVG-and-code workflow, not built-in image-to-video generation.
What Claude can create—and what it cannot
Anthropic’s Help Center says Claude chat is limited to text-based output, though you can upload images for Claude to work with. That means asking for an image in an ordinary chat does not provide a documented route to a finished PNG or other bitmap image. Anthropic’s answer on image generation describes the distinction.
For a new visual, the relevant option is Claude Artifacts. Anthropic lists SVG images and interactive code among the kinds of content an Artifact can contain. You can describe a visual, have Claude produce its code in a separate artifact view, and refine it through conversation. SVG is a vector format, so it is useful for illustrations and graphics that can scale without becoming pixelated; the Artifact may also be an interactive coded experience rather than a standalone image file. Create a visual in an Artifact
Start with the visual you want and specify enough detail to guide the result: subject, style, palette, layout, dimensions or aspect ratio, and intended use. Anthropic’s how-to guide recommends beginning with an idea, refining it in conversation, asking Claude to build the Artifact, and then iterating with follow-up requests. Interface labels and availability can change, so use Anthropic’s current Artifact guide for the latest directions.

- Open a Claude conversation. Find Artifacts in the interface available to your account; if you do not see the feature, check Anthropic’s current help pages for availability.
- Describe the visual. For example: “Create a self-contained SVG illustration of a small greenhouse on a rainy evening. Use a calm, flat-vector style, muted greens and warm window light, and a landscape layout.”
- Ask Claude to build it as an Artifact. Name the format and request a standalone SVG or an interactive visual, depending on what you need.
- Review the preview and refine it. Give targeted follow-up instructions, such as changing the composition, colors, element size, or contrast. Make one or two changes at a time so you can judge their effect.
- Inspect or export the result. Anthropic says users can view an Artifact’s underlying code, copy content, and download files. Choose the option that matches the Artifact and your intended use.
The prompt above is an example, not a guaranteed recipe. Claude’s output may need correction, and a visual that works in an Artifact preview may still require changes before use in another app or a production website.
Ask Claude to animate the visual
To request motion, specify what moves, how it moves, and whether the animation loops or responds to an action. Claude can attempt to express that motion in the SVG or interactive code Artifact. The reviewed Anthropic pages document SVG and interactive Artifact content, but they do not describe a dedicated animation generator or native video-generation feature.

For example, after creating the greenhouse illustration, ask: “Add a subtle looping animation: animate the rain falling outside and make the window light pulse very gently. Keep the illustration self-contained in the SVG, and avoid moving the building or text.” This is guidance for a code-based request, not a tested prompt or a guarantee that the animation will behave correctly.
Check motion before using it
- Ask for a specific speed and direction, such as slow raindrops moving downward, rather than “make it lively.”
- Preview the animation for awkward movement, flicker, jumps at the loop point, and effects that distract from the image.
- Request a reduced-motion-friendly option or a way to pause the motion when the visual will be used in an interactive experience.
- If the Artifact includes controls, test that they work and are understandable.
If a change breaks the image or animation, ask Claude to adjust the relevant part of the Artifact and check the new preview. You can also inspect the underlying code, copy it, or download the file to review or modify it outside Claude.

Use an image you already have
You can upload an image and ask Claude to analyze it or help turn its concept into a new SVG Artifact. Uploading an image does not, by itself, make that image animated. Claude’s documented image input formats for Claude.ai are JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP. Anthropic lists a maximum of 30 MB and 8000 × 8000 pixels per image, and recommends images of at least 1000 × 1000 pixels for best results when working with images. These are the limits and recommendation in Anthropic’s image-upload guidance; check the page for current specifications.
For example, upload a reference image and ask Claude to identify its main shapes, palette, or layout. Then request a separate SVG illustration inspired by those characteristics and, if useful, ask for code-based motion in the new Artifact. This produces a new visual rather than converting the uploaded bitmap into a video.

Share or take the Artifact elsewhere
Artifacts can be iterated, viewed in different versions, inspected as code, copied, and downloaded. Anthropic’s guide says a published Artifact can be accessed by people with its link until it is unpublished; public sharing and feature availability depend on account context. Review the current sharing controls before publishing anything, especially if the Artifact or its contents should not be public.
An Artifact is a convenient way to explore or prototype a visual, but it is not automatically a production-ready asset. Check how the downloaded code behaves in its intended environment, confirm that any animation and controls work there, and make any accessibility or compatibility changes your use case requires.
