To create an interactive PowerPoint, first decide what the audience should do: navigate between sections, reveal information on a click, open a link or run an action, or submit answers. Use Zoom or hyperlinks for navigation, animation triggers for reveals, and Microsoft Forms for polls and quizzes. The available features and ribbon labels vary by PowerPoint version and platform.

Choose the interaction you need

Goal PowerPoint feature Best fit
Let viewers choose where to go Zoom or hyperlinks A menu, branching path, or links to specific slides
Reveal content after a click Animation trigger Staged explanations, clues, or answer reveals
Open a destination or perform an action Hyperlink or Action Button A website, another file, an email link, or a configured action
Collect audience responses Microsoft Forms A poll, quiz, or survey

Build a non-linear presentation with Zoom

Zoom lets a presenter jump among selected slides or sections in an order they choose. Use a Summary Zoom as a presentation overview, a Section Zoom to navigate to a section, or a Slide Zoom to link to selected slides. For background on Zoom types and supported versions, see Microsoft’s Zoom for PowerPoint guidance.

  1. Organize the deck. If you want section-based navigation, create and arrange the relevant sections first.
  2. Insert the Zoom. Choose Insert > Zoom, then select Section Zoom, Summary Zoom, or Slide Zoom, depending on the destinations you want.
  3. Choose and arrange destinations. Select the sections or slides to include. For a Slide Zoom, position the slide previews on the overview slide so the choices are clear.
  4. Check the return behavior. Summary and Section Zoom return to the Zoom slide by default; Slide Zoom advances by default. You can change the Return to Zoom setting. Confirm the behavior in the PowerPoint version you will present with.
  5. Test in Slide Show. Follow each destination and verify that the presentation returns or advances as intended.

Check Zoom compatibility before building around it

Microsoft lists Zoom creation and playback for PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 and PowerPoint 2024, 2021, and 2019 on Windows; on Mac, it lists Microsoft 365 version 16.19 or newer and PowerPoint 2024 and 2021. PowerPoint 2016 can play Zoom as hyperlinks, without the Zoom transition. The requirements table does not list Zoom support for PowerPoint for the web or PowerPoint Live in Teams; mobile entries can play Zoom. Check Microsoft’s current requirements table for the version and platform you use.

Link text, shapes, or pictures to a slide or resource

For a simple menu item, “Next” control, or link to a resource, make text, a shape, or a picture clickable. Microsoft documents links to a slide, website, another file or presentation, and an email address.

Before delivering the deck, test navigation, links, animation triggers, media, and forms on the device or in the environment that will actually be used.
