Google’s current instructions cover image creation in Search and AI Mode, with editing available through follow-up requests. The feature first appeared as part of Search Generative Experience (SGE) in 2023, but today’s workflow and availability should be checked against Google’s current Help page.
How to create an image in Google Search
- Open Google Search and enter a descriptive prompt for the image you want.
- Submit the prompt. Google says a generated image may appear in an AI Overview.
- Ask for changes in AI Mode if you want to edit the result. Describe the change you want in a follow-up request.
For example, Google’s current Help gives the prompt “Generate an image of an orange tabby cat cooking.” A more specific prompt can spell out the subject, setting, activity, style, and details you want included. Google cautions that AI responses may contain mistakes, so check outputs rather than treating them as factual or authoritative.
Create or edit images in AI Mode
Google also documents a dedicated image-creation route in AI Mode:
- Choose Create Images in AI Mode.
- Enter a prompt describing the image.
- To edit an existing image, upload it and describe the changes you want.
On Android, Google’s Help page additionally describes creating images through Lens and Circle to Search. These mobile entry points are not guaranteed to be available on every device or in every region.

Who can use Search image generation?
Google’s current Help says users must be at least 18 and signed in to a personal Google Account they manage. Availability also depends on language and location; the documented Search flow is currently available in English, and supported territories can vary by feature. Check Google’s current instructions for creating and editing images in Search to confirm whether the feature is available to you.
What changed since the 2023 SGE announcement?
Google introduced text-to-image generation in Search as part of its Search Generative Experience experiment on October 12, 2023. At launch, Google said SGE could return up to four images for a prompt; selecting one showed a more detailed prompt that users could revise. That was a description of the launch-era experiment, not a guarantee about the current interface or image count.
Google’s launch example was “draw a picture of a capybara wearing a chef’s hat and cooking breakfast.” The announcement described users changing details such as the food or background. Current Help instead describes image generation in Search and AI Mode, so old SGE screenshots, instructions, and access claims may no longer match what you see.
Usage limits and plans
Image generation has daily usage limits. Google says Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra subscribers have higher limits, but the exact allowance can change with capacity, demand, and plan. Google does not establish a permanent quota in its current Help, so check the live instructions rather than relying on a number from an older guide.

Labels, watermarking, and checking results
Google’s 2023 SGE announcement said generated images would include metadata labeling and embedded watermarking to indicate they were AI-generated. In a February 2024 post about Imagen 2, Google said consumer-product images made with that model would be marked with SynthID, an imperceptible watermark embedded in image pixels and designed to be detectable. Those statements apply to the experiences described at the time; they do not establish that every image currently generated in Search uses the same model or an unchanged watermarking implementation.
Google warns that AI responses can be mistaken. Review generated text, diagrams, and other consequential details carefully; an image that looks polished is not proof that its contents are accurate.
