To create a download link for a ZIP file, upload the ZIP to a cloud or file-transfer service, set who can access it, then copy and test the link. A ZIP file is an archive—it does not create a web link by itself. If your ZIP is already online, skip the upload and use that file’s sharing controls.
1. Create a ZIP file if you do not already have one
On Windows, File Explorer can make a ZIP without extra software:
- Find the file or folder you want to share.
- Right-click it and select Show more options > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
- Windows creates the ZIP in the same location. Rename it if needed.
A ZIP bundles files into one archive and may reduce their combined size. Already-compressed files, such as JPEG images, may not shrink much. Also, do not assume ZIP creation preserves file encryption: Microsoft warns that encrypted files placed in a zipped folder may be unencrypted when extracted. Review the archive contents before sharing it. Microsoft’s instructions for zipping and unzipping files describe the Windows workflow and encryption caveat.
2. Choose where to host or send the ZIP
Upload the archive to a service that can provide a shareable link, or locate it in a service where it is already stored. The right choice depends on whether you want to share ongoing access to a stored file or send a copy with delivery settings.

3. Create and copy the sharing link
Google Drive
- In Drive, find the ZIP and select Share.
- Under General access, choose Anyone with the link if recipients should be able to open it without individual invitations and your account permits that setting. Otherwise, keep access restricted and add the intended people.
- Choose the available role, then select Copy link.
Work or school administrators may restrict external sharing or disable anyone-with-the-link access. See Google’s sharing instructions for current controls.
Dropbox shared link
- Open the ZIP’s sharing controls and select Share.
- Choose or manage the link, then select Link for viewing if recipients should not edit the original. Use an editing link only when that access is intended.
- Select Copy link and share the copied URL.
Dropbox’s documented sequence is Share > Copy link > Manage > Link for viewing or Link for editing > Copy link. Labels and available controls can vary with account settings. See Dropbox’s link instructions.

Dropbox Transfer
- Create a transfer containing the ZIP in Dropbox Transfer.
- Check the expiration and any password options available for your plan.
- Create the transfer and copy its link.
Dropbox’s current help documentation says automatic expiration is 7 or 30 days depending on plan; eligible listed plans can extend expiration up to a year. Confirm the setting shown in your account, then tell recipients when the link expires. See Dropbox Transfer guidance.
4. Test the link before sending it
- Open the copied link in a private or signed-out browser window, or ask a recipient to test it.
- Confirm the intended audience can access the ZIP and that the link does not require an account or invitation you did not intend.
- Check that the filename and archive contents are correct before distributing the link.
Fix common access problems
The recipient sees an access-denied message
Check the file’s general-access setting, whether the recipient was specifically invited, and any work or school sharing restrictions. In Drive, anyone-with-the-link access may be unavailable under some organizational accounts. If the recipient should not have broad access, invite that person directly instead of making the file public to anyone with the link. Google’s sharing guidance explains the available access options.

The recipient can edit when you only meant to allow downloads
Change the link or invitation to view-only where available. Dropbox explicitly separates viewing and editing link options; check the selected setting in the file’s sharing controls. Dropbox’s view-only access guidance covers that distinction.
The link expires too soon
For a Dropbox Transfer, verify the expiration shown in your account and check whether your plan offers a different setting. If recipients need continuing access, consider a shared-file link instead of a transfer link. These link types serve different purposes and do not necessarily have the same persistence. The archive contains private or encrypted files
Review what is inside the ZIP and who can access it. ZIP creation does not guarantee that files remain encrypted when extracted; Microsoft specifically warns of this for encrypted files added to a zipped folder. A password option, when available from a transfer service, is a separate control and is not enabled by default for every ZIP or link. Microsoft’s ZIP guidance and Dropbox Transfer guidance explain these limitations.
