First decide what you need: a Windows installation ISO lets you install or reinstall Windows, while a backup image preserves an existing drive’s contents for recovery. They are different files made for different jobs. Microsoft’s media tool creates Windows installation media; a disk-imaging application creates its own backup format, not an ISO.
Choose the right kind of image

Do not use an ISO creator expecting it to capture your configured Windows drive. Conversely, Windows installation media is not a backup of your existing programs, settings, or files.
Create Windows 10 installation media
Use Microsoft’s Windows 10 download page if you want installation media. Microsoft’s current instructions use MediaCreationTool.exe and offer a way to create an ISO for a virtual machine or to burn to DVD. The USB option makes bootable installation media, not a full-drive backup.
- Open Microsoft’s Windows 10 download page and download MediaCreationTool.exe.
- Run the tool and follow its prompts to choose installation-media creation.
- Choose ISO file if you need an ISO for a virtual machine or DVD installation media. Choose USB flash drive to create USB installation media.
- If creating USB media, connect a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of space and select it when prompted. Microsoft warns that the tool deletes the drive’s contents, so copy anything you need elsewhere first.
Back up personal files before installing or reinstalling Windows. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; creating installation media does not restore support or security updates.

Create a backup image of your existing hard drive
A disk-image backup is the appropriate choice when you want to preserve an existing Windows installation for recovery. The image is stored in the imaging application’s format; it is not a standard Windows ISO. Macrium’s image tutorial describes a general workflow: start an image-backup wizard, choose a full image, select the disk or partitions, choose a destination folder, review options, and run the backup.
- Open the imaging application’s backup-image wizard and choose a full image if you need a complete backup of the selected disk or partitions.
- Review the disk layout and the partitions the software proposes to include. Do not assume that selecting only C: captures every partition needed to restore a bootable Windows system.
- Choose a destination folder on separate local storage or a network location. An external hard drive can be a practical destination if it has enough available capacity for the resulting image; the actual space needed depends on the selected data and the application’s settings.
- Review the imaging summary and any options, such as encryption, compression, splitting the image, or verification, if the current application offers them.
- Run the backup and confirm that the application reports completion. Follow that application’s current rescue-media and restore instructions when you need to recover the image.
Macrium’s older partition-selection documentation explains the concepts of imaging an entire disk with “Image this disk” or imaging individual partitions, checking the default selection, setting a destination, reviewing the summary, and running the backup. Its interface guidance is legacy v5-era material, so use the current version’s documentation for exact screen labels and recovery steps. Those pages do not establish whether a current free edition is available.

Keep the two storage requirements separate
- Microsoft’s blank USB drive requirement—at least 8 GB—applies to creating Windows installation media. Microsoft says its contents are erased.
- A disk-image backup may be much larger than installation media. Choose separate local or network storage with enough capacity for the backup; no fixed capacity is established here.
- A USB installation drive is not automatically a suitable or complete destination for a full hard-drive backup.
When Windows deployment tools are relevant
System builders customizing and deploying Windows images to devices have a different workflow from personal drive backup. Microsoft’s deployment guidance covers bootable WinPE media and uses Windows ADK/WinPE. It is an advanced deployment path, not a simple method for backing up a personal computer; the page was last updated October 25, 2021.
