To create a seamless loop for YouTube Live, edit the video so its final image and sound flow naturally into the opening, then play the exported file on repeat in an encoder such as OBS Studio. In OBS, add the file as a Media Source and enable Loop. That setting repeats playback; it cannot fix a visible jump, flash, silence, or audio click in the edit.
1. Make the end connect to the beginning
Choose an ending that can lead naturally back to the opening. Check the picture and audio together: movement, brightness, sound level, and timing should not make the restart stand out. For ambience or music, listen closely at the boundary for a change in level, a gap, or a click.
Do not rely on the loop setting to smooth the edit. It only restarts playback when the file ends. The seam itself has to be handled in your editing software.
2. Export the video and inspect the seam
Review the actual exported file—not just the editing timeline—by watching and listening across the ending-to-beginning boundary. Exporting can affect frame timing, so a transition that looked clean in the editor may not behave exactly the same in the finished file. Make any needed edit, export again, and check the new file before going live.

3. Set up repeat playback in OBS
- Add the source: In your OBS scene, go to the Sources dock, select the add-source control, and choose Media Source. Select the exported video file.
- Enable repeat: In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. OBS describes this setting as controlling whether the file plays again once playback has completed. The setting repeats the whole file; it does not create a crossfade or repair a bad seam.
- Check the source: Start playback in OBS and watch through at least one restart. Confirm the picture and sound continue as expected.
OBS documents support for media types including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. If you need a sequence of files rather than one repeating video, use a VLC Video source and its playlist-loop option; VLC must be installed for that source.
4. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Check eligibility: YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Availability and restrictions are account-specific; check your channel’s Live Control Room if you cannot create a stream. YouTube: Get started with live streaming.
- Create or open the live stream: In YouTube Studio, open Go live to reach the Live Control Room and set up the stream.
- Enter the connection details in OBS: Use the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s encoder setup. Treat the key as a password: do not share it, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Use secure ingest: YouTube recommends RTMPS. Select the RTMPS server option when configuring the encoder if it is available in your setup. YouTube: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
5. Choose video settings that fit your connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, with intervals not exceeding 4 seconds. The following H.264 bitrates are YouTube recommendations for the listed ingest formats, not guarantees of a particular picture quality:

Set OBS output to the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, then choose the matching bitrate recommendation. Higher resolution or frame rate needs more upload bandwidth. YouTube’s recommended values for other formats or codecs may differ; consult its encoder settings page rather than applying these H.264 figures to a different profile.
Your connection must support the total outgoing stream bitrate reliably. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% headroom above that total, because using all available upload capacity leaves little room for variation. 6. Preflight and monitor the live stream
- Test with audio and movement similar to the material you plan to broadcast.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public stream.
- Confirm the stream is reachable from the channel or watch page and check it on a mobile device.
- Monitor audio, video, and stream health during the broadcast. A successful local loop does not prove the internet connection or YouTube ingest is healthy.
- If you need a recording, enable a local archive in your encoder and confirm the file is being written.
7. Know the limits of YouTube’s archive and DVR
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local backup. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured; DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Do not treat YouTube’s archive as the only copy of a long broadcast. 8. Troubleshoot common loop and stream problems
- The video restarts, but the seam is obvious: The loop is working; the edit is not seamless. Adjust the ending or opening, export again, and inspect the boundary in the finished file.
- The video plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled for the selected file.
- A playlist does not play or repeat: Confirm VLC is installed when using the VLC Video source, and check the playlist and its loop option.
- YouTube does not accept the encoder connection: Recheck the stream URL and key in OBS and confirm the channel meets YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- The preview or stream health is poor: Check the upload connection and reduce the output bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the selected profile with headroom.
- The live stream is not archived as expected: Do not assume a stream longer than 12 hours will be captured. Keep and verify a local recording instead.

Will enabling Loop hide a bad transition?
No. It repeats the file but does not smooth the end-to-start boundary.
