To loop a prerecorded video into YouTube Live, run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the input and -re to send it at normal playback speed. That makes playback repeat indefinitely; it does not fix a jarring edit, audio pop, or timestamp gap at the join. For a smooth loop, prepare and inspect the media seam, then test the stream in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it.
What you need before starting
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can stay on and connected throughout the stream.
- A prerecorded video file you have the rights to stream, prepared at a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate suitable for your upload connection and YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- A YouTube channel set up for live streaming and its stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- A reliable upload connection with capacity for the stream’s bitrate, plus headroom for normal network variation.
FFmpeg’s -re option reads a file at its native rate, while -stream_loop -1 requests an indefinite repeat. These are playback controls, not seam-repair tools. See the FFmpeg documentation.
Prepare the video so the repeat point looks and sounds natural
Watch the end of the file followed immediately by its beginning. Check the image and sound, not just the file’s total duration. A hard cut, flash, abrupt change in motion, silence, loud transient, or mismatched ambience will recur each time FFmpeg reaches the end.
- Choose an in-point and out-point where the picture, movement, and sound can plausibly connect.
- If necessary, edit, trim, or crossfade the material in a video or audio editor and render a new file. No single crossfade duration or FFmpeg filter suits every source; the right choice depends on the content, timing, and whether you must preserve the exact clip duration.
- Review the rendered boundary repeatedly, including the audio. A playback loop can repeat a clean edit; it cannot make a flawed boundary seamless by itself.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a?
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -preset veryfast
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "<YouTube ingest URL>/<stream key>"
- Get the destination from YouTube Live Control Room. Use the ingest URL and stream key shown for the live stream. Do not publish the key in a screenshot, command transcript, or public post.
- Set the input options before the input.
-reand-stream_loop -1apply to the input that follows, so they appear before-i input.mp4. The negative one requests unlimited looping. - Map the streams you intend to send.
-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream.-map 0:a?selects audio if present and makes that mapping optional. If the file has no audio, decide whether to send it silently or add an intentional audio source; do not assume a missing audio stream will produce the result you want. - Choose encoding settings for the source and destination. The example uses H.264 video and AAC audio as an illustrative combination. Set the output resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval for your source, encoder capacity, connection, and YouTube’s current guidance. If you change the output frame rate or scale the picture, add the corresponding FFmpeg options deliberately rather than assuming the template does so.
- Start FFmpeg and confirm progress. Keep the process running; watch that frame and timestamp progress continues when the file reaches its end. In Live Control Room, confirm the incoming stream and inspect stream health before making the event public or relying on it.
The -map 0:a? syntax is optional audio mapping, not a guarantee that any particular audio configuration will be accepted for your stream. The codecs and preset above are examples only. FFmpeg and YouTube recommendations may change; check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg build and YouTube’s current encoder settings.
Stream several files as one repeating playlist
For compatible files, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join compressed inputs without re-encoding. The inputs need matching stream layouts and compatible properties; inaccurate container durations can introduce timestamp gaps or artifacts. The FFmpeg FAQ distinguishes this approach from the concat filter, which is appropriate when re-encoding is needed.

Use the concat demuxer when the files are compatible
Create a trusted text file such as playlist.txt:
file '/media/part1.mp4'
file '/media/part2.mp4'
Then loop the playlist input and send it to YouTube:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a?
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -preset veryfast
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "<YouTube ingest URL>/<stream key>"
-safe 0 allows paths outside the concat demuxer’s safe subset. Use it only with a playlist file you trust, and check the installed FFmpeg build’s concat and looping behavior. As with a single file, verify the join from the last playlist entry back to the first; joining individual clips does not make the playlist’s final-to-first boundary smooth.

Normalize mismatched inputs before joining
If the files differ in codec, time base, stream layout, or other relevant properties, do not assume the demuxer can join them cleanly. Normalize them to compatible outputs or use the concat filter and re-encode. Check durations and timestamps as well as the visible and audible joins. See the FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg FAQ for concat requirements and options.
Match YouTube Live’s ingest guidance
YouTube Help’s encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the live encoder settings table for the exact output mode rather than carrying over a number from another resolution.

| H.264 output mode | YouTube Help minimum bitrate | YouTube Help recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube Help’s published H.264 recommendations, accessed in 2026; the table may be updated. Use the current YouTube encoder settings page for your selected mode. The stream’s configured bitrate is not the only consideration: your encoder must sustain it and your upload connection must carry it reliably.

YouTube Help advises streamers: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Use audio and movement representative of the planned stream, then monitor stream health and any messages during the event. A short preflight can expose an incorrect key, unsupported settings, a missing audio stream, network limits, or a loop boundary that needs another edit.

Troubleshooting a loop or ingest problem
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| The video does not repeat | The process stopped, the option was placed after the wrong input, or the installed build behaves differently than expected. | Keep -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i; check that FFmpeg remains running and that frame and timestamp progress continue through the file’s end. |
| There is a visible jump or audio pop at each restart | The source’s end and beginning do not join naturally, or the media contains a boundary/timestamp issue. | Inspect the last and first frames and listen across the audio boundary. Edit or render a cleaner loop, then test the new file. |
| A playlist has a pause, glitch, or timestamp discontinuity | Inputs have incompatible streams or inaccurate container durations. | Check stream layout, codecs, time bases, and durations. Normalize the files or use the concat filter and re-encode when needed. |
| YouTube reports a configuration or stream-health issue | The codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe cadence, or incoming signal may not fit the selected mode. | Compare the actual output with YouTube’s current encoder guidance and inspect Live Control Room messages. Google’s Live API health-status documentation describes configuration issue categories. |
| No audio reaches YouTube | The input has no audio stream, or the mapping/encoding does not match the intended output. | Check which streams the file contains. Add a deliberate audio source if required, or configure the stream for the audio you actually have. |
| The stream starts but becomes unstable | The computer or upload connection may not sustain the chosen settings, or the input/encoder process may have stopped advancing. | Check FFmpeg progress, the machine’s encoding capacity, network stability, and YouTube’s reported health. Test at the intended output settings before a long session. |
