Treat it as an unofficial fan quiz for entertainment or reflection—not an official Sorting Ceremony or a validated psychological test.
1. Decide what each house result means
Start by writing a short, balanced description of each outcome. Base the profiles on the books or official franchise material, and make sure none reads like the obvious “best” answer. Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin are the four outcomes to build around. HarryPotter.com’s official house quiz is a useful reference for franchise context, but it does not document the official Sorting Ceremony’s scoring algorithm.
Describe each house in terms of priorities or decision-making, not just a list of flattering adjectives. This makes it easier to write questions that distinguish the outcomes without suggesting that one house is more admirable than another.
2. Write questions that reveal choices and values
If the quiz promises a personality recommendation, ask about how people respond to situations rather than relying only on trivia, favorite colors, mascots, or characters. Short scenarios work well: what someone would prioritize when a group faces a difficult decision, how they might respond to unfair treatment, or what kind of challenge they find most rewarding. These are example prompts, not official questions.

Keep questions concise and answers distinct enough to score consistently. Avoid wording that makes the intended house obvious; otherwise, participants may choose the result they want rather than the answer that best reflects their instincts.
3. Score each answer across the four houses
Maintain a running total for Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. Give each answer points for the traits it suggests, using the same scoring logic throughout. An answer does not have to belong exclusively to one house: you can award points to more than one total when a choice reflects overlapping qualities. At the end, compare the four totals and identify the leading score.
A documented example offers a useful design reference, not a scoring key to copy. TIME reported that its 2017 quiz was developed with University of Cambridge researchers and used 21 questions to measure affinity for each house independently, allowing participants to be close to more than one house (TIME’s 2017 quiz). In a 2019 account, TIME described the inventory as drawing on four existing personality surveys and measuring courage, agreeableness, honesty/humility, conscientiousness, and Machiavellianism (TIME’s account of the project). Those details describe that research project, not a universally validated sorting method. Do not claim your own quiz is scientifically validated unless it has actually been tested and validated for that purpose.
4. Handle close scores transparently
Show the highest-scoring house, and consider displaying the next closest match when the scores are near each other. A tie or close result can reflect overlapping preferences; it need not be turned into an arbitrary, definitive label. TIME’s example measured each house affinity independently, rather than treating the houses as mutually exclusive categories.

On the result page, state briefly how the score was calculated and frame the outcome as entertainment or reflection, not a formal psychological assessment. That lets participants understand both what the result says and what it does not establish.
5. Build and test the outcome pages
A quiz platform can keep answer scores and display a customized result based on the totals. forms.app’s Harry Potter house quiz template documents editable questions, scoring with a calculator, custom ending messages, and sharing or embedding options. These are the vendor’s documented features, not an independent comparison of quiz platforms.

When comparing tools, check whether they support scores for every answer, at least four outcomes, custom result text, a shareable or embeddable quiz, and the data controls your project needs. The available vendor documentation establishes features for its template, not comparative pricing, accessibility, privacy terms, or performance across providers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Be clear about data and official status
If the quiz collects email addresses or retains answers, tell participants what information you collect and why before they submit it. TIME’s research project described an optional consent step for people who chose to share responses for further research; an informal fan quiz should likewise make any optional data contribution clear.
